The patronal feast of Gragnano, blending faith, motors, and tradition
The Saint Sebastian Festival is the most cherished event on the calendar in Gragnano, a town in the province of Naples known worldwide as the City of Pasta. Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of the community, and his feast unites the entire citizenry in a blend of faith, folk tradition, and local pride. Although the liturgical feast falls on January 20th, for some years now, the civil celebrations and the procession have been moved to late April and early May: the milder climate encourages the participation of the faithful and the revival of a tradition that was at risk of fading away.
The heart of the festival is the monumental Church of Corpus Domini, a 16th-century building in the historic center of Gragnano that houses the wooden effigy of the Saint. In the side chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian, an 18th-century wooden statue is kept, which is carried in procession on the solemn day. The festivities open with Holy Mass and the enthronement of the effigy, marking the start of a three-day preparation period that culminates in the procession of the Fercolo through the city streets.
The most anticipated moment is the procession of the Fercolo, when the Saint is carried on the shoulders of the faithful through Via Roma, Via Pasquale Nastro, and Piazza Aubry. In recent years, the community has sought to restore a historic processional route dating back over sixty years, returning an authentic fragment of their collective memory to the city. The procession is accompanied by deeply felt rites such as the raising of the Labarum and, during the week, the celebration of Confirmations presided over by the Archbishop.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival thrives on beloved civil events: the motorcycle rally with the blessing of the vehicles in Piazza Aubry, the vintage Fiat 500 rally with the blessing of the cars, the maccheronata in Piazza Aubry organized by the San Sebastiano al Corpus Domini Association accompanied by musical entertainment, the concert by the Fanfare of the 10th Campania Carabinieri Regiment, and a theater evening to conclude the festivities. A program that combines devotion with public celebration, local flavors, and music.
Celebrating Saint Sebastian in Gragnano means experiencing the most authentic soul of this Campanian town: pasta and its gastronomic culture, popular religiosity, and the bond between generations. For the visitor, it is the ideal opportunity to discover a historic center rich in churches and memories, taste the famous Gragnano PGI pasta, and get involved in a tradition that, every spring, returns to fill the squares of the City of Pasta.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Sebastian Festival in Gragnano took place from April 30 to May 7, confirming for the third consecutive year the shift of the festivities from the liturgical date of January 20th to the month of May. The heart of the festival was the solemn procession of the Fercolo along Via Roma, Via Pasquale Nastro, and Piazza Aubry, following the historic route restored after more than sixty years.
Gragnano can be reached by train via the Circumvesuviana Naples-Gragnano line (Gragnano station) and by car from the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, taking the Castellammare di Stabia exit and continuing towards Gragnano. The events take place in the historic center, around the Church of Corpus Domini and Piazza Aubry.
All religious and civil events are free of charge.
We recommend following the procession route along Via Roma and Piazza Aubry and taking the opportunity to taste the famous Gragnano pasta.
