The patronal feast of Penne blending faith, local marching bands, and an agricultural fair
The Saint Maximus Festival is the most cherished event in the calendar of Penne, an elegant town in the province of Pescara, located in the heart of the Abruzzo Vestino region. Saint Maximus, a Christian deacon and martyr born around 228 AD in Aveia, near L'Aquila, is the patron saint of the city and the entire diocese of Pescara-Penne. Tradition holds that he was martyred during the persecutions of Emperor Decius: remaining faithful to his beliefs despite torture and temptation, he was reportedly thrown from a high cliff. His memory is celebrated on May 7th, the religious heart of a festival that involves the entire community of Penne.
The sacred program begins with solemn vespers and Holy Mass at the Church of San Domenico. On the day of the patron saint, the morning kicks off with a parade by the City of Penne Band, which travels from Piazzetta Santa Croce through the historic center. Following the Holy Masses, including the evening service presided over by the Archbishop, the solemn procession featuring the bust and relics of Saint Maximus winds through the main streets, a moment of deep popular participation and devotion.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers an intense entertainment lineup. Piazza Luca da Penne hosts evening concerts and musical performances that bring the festival nights to life, featuring live bands and themed events. There is no shortage of food stalls offering Abruzzese specialties and street food, a raffle with great prizes, and the authentic village atmosphere that defines one of the most iconic celebrations of the Vestino territory.
The patronal feast is joined by the Saint Maximus Agricultural Fair, dedicated to farming culture and the rural traditions of the area. Between Largo San Francesco and the multi-story parking area, visitors can admire vintage tractors and historic farm machinery, farm animals, demonstrations of ancient crafts like rope-making and wood-splitting, artisans at work, and local products. The fair, which has seen multiple editions in recent years, is designed to reconnect both adults and children with the agricultural identity of the Abruzzo hinterland, complete with folk music concerts and family-friendly shows.
Between devotion, music, and farming tradition, the Saint Maximus Festival tells the story of the soul of Penne: one of the most beautiful art cities in Abruzzo, with its characteristic brick-built historic center. An event that every May draws residents and visitors together to celebrate faith, community, and the roots of the Vestino area.
The 2026 Saint Maximus Festival was held in Penne from Wednesday, May 6th, to Friday, May 8th. The religious program opened on May 6th at 6:30 PM with solemn vespers and Holy Mass at the Church of San Domenico. On May 7th, the patron saint's day, the day began at 8:30 AM with the parade of the City of Penne Band from Piazzetta Santa Croce; this was followed by Holy Masses at 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM, and the solemn procession with the bust and relics of Saint Maximus.
On the secular side, on May 7th at 9:30 PM in Piazza Luca da Penne, the live show by the band Scena Muta took place, while on May 8th, the MYTIKA90 show was performed, dedicated to the hits of the 90s, followed late in the evening by the raffle drawing. For all three days, food stalls with Abruzzese specialties and street food were active.
Penne can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Pescara-Città Sant'Angelo exit, then SS81) or the A25. The nearest airport is Pescara (Abruzzo Airport), about 40 km away. By train, the reference station is Pescara Centrale, which is connected to Penne by bus lines.
The patronal feast takes place around May 7th, the day of Saint Maximus. Secular events and the Agricultural Fair are concentrated in the first third of May.
Participation in the religious rites, square concerts, and the fair is free.
