The first Sunday of May in the village of Gavignano Sabino, a hamlet of Forano

The Saint Macarius Festival is the traditional annual event in the village of Gavignano Sabino, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Forano, in the province of Rieti, Lazio. The local calendar of recurring events consistently places it on the first Sunday of May: a date that, for generations, has marked the beginning of the warm season for the Gavignano community and the entire Lower Sabina area.
This is not a major tourist-board event, but something perhaps even more valuable: a genuine festival, organized by the locals for the locals, where the religious and social dimensions intertwine seamlessly. Visitors will find a village of a few dozen houses, an open panorama towards the Sabini Mountains, and a sense of hospitality that feels entirely natural.
The heart of the celebration is the church dedicated to Saint Macarius, the main religious building in Gavignano and one of the sights that best justifies a stop in the village. It hosts the solemn morning mass and the afternoon procession that winds through the alleys of the historic center. The saint has been venerated here for a long time, and his festival, along with the Saint Rita Festival on the last Sunday of May, is one of the two most important devotional moments of the year for the hamlet.
Gavignano is about three kilometers from the municipal seat of Forano. Local tradition suggests the village was founded where a villa of the gens Gabinia once stood and that the name derives from a Roman consul, Sabinianus or Gabinianus: the ancient attested forms are indeed Sabinianum and Gabinianum. Like the castle of Forano, the one in Gavignano was built between the 10th and 11th centuries on the ruins of a pre-existing Roman structure, and throughout the Middle Ages, it passed through the hands of numerous noble families—including the Orsini, Cesi, Pellegrini, and De Somma.
The result is a compact urban layout with a well-preserved historic core, which comes to life during the festival like at no other time of the year.
The detailed program is released each year a few weeks in advance, primarily through parish channels, posters displayed in the village, and local committees: those wishing to attend should check directly with the Municipality of Forano in the days leading up to the event.
The Saint Macarius Festival effectively opens the season of Gavignano events, which continues with the Water Festival in June, the Sabina Beer Festival in early July, the celebrations in honor of Saint John Bosco and Saint John the Baptist at the end of August, and the Music Festival in September. In the main town of Forano, however, the most famous event remains the Pasta Festival on August 14th, which has already surpassed its sixtieth edition.
Those looking for the Italy of authentic patronal festivals—where there are no tickets, no large-scale stages, but an entire community recognizing itself in a ritual repeated since time immemorial—will find exactly that in Gavignano. The Sabina spring, with its reviving olive groves and lush green hills, is the best time to explore this part of Lazio that remains largely untouched by mass tourism.
The official calendar of recurring events for the Municipality of Forano places the Saint Macarius Festival on the first Sunday of May, which in 2026 corresponded to Sunday, May 3. The celebration took place as usual in Gavignano Sabino, in the province of Rieti, with the traditional devotional and social structure.
No detailed program for the edition was published online: as is the case for many patronal festivals in the Lower Sabina area, communication took place mainly through posters displayed in the village and parish word-of-mouth.
Detailed program not released online. The festival follows the traditional format: solemn mass in the church of Saint Macarius, procession with the statue of the saint along the streets of the village of Gavignano, and convivial moments organized by the festival committee. For specific information, it is recommended to contact the Municipality of Forano or the local parish.
Gavignano Sabino is a hamlet of Forano, about 3 km from the municipal center, in the province of Rieti. By car, it can be reached from the Salaria (SS4) or the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, taking the Ponzano Romano-Soratte exit and continuing towards the Sabina region. By train, the reference station is Poggio Mirteto Scalo on the FL1 Rome-Orte line, a few kilometers away, with a connection by car or local bus.
Participation in the festival and religious services is free. Any food stalls managed by the festival committee operate on a pay-per-consumption basis.
Do not miss the Palazzo Savelli-Strozzi in Forano, the Church of the Holy Trinity (17th century), and the Church of Saint Sebastian (15th century). Among the local typical products, the Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil and the nociata, a traditional dessert made with walnuts and honey.
