The historic fair of Cernusco sul Naviglio, a journey through time with Belle Époque, stalls, and shows
In Cernusco sul Naviglio, in the province of Milan, the Saint Joseph's Fair is much more than a fair: it is the city's identity event. With a history spanning over a century — the 103rd edition will be celebrated in 2026 — the event marks the town's awakening after winter each year, transforming the historic center and the gardens of Villa Alari into a widespread stage for four days.
The common thread of the fair is an authentic journey back in time to the Belle Époque and the Liberty style. Amidst crinolines, corsets, and surprising vintage technological innovations, the gardens of Villa Alari — recently reopened — and the town center streets come alive with costumed figures recreating scenes of daily life from the early twentieth century. A meticulously crafted setting that makes the Saint Joseph's Fair a unique event of its kind.
Alongside the historical re-enactment, the fair offers everything you would expect from a large town festival: the funfair, the farmers' market, stalls, a craft market in Piazza Gavazzi, performances by street painters (madonnari), and art exhibitions along the Naviglio della Martesana canal. There are also concerts, civic awards, and moments of solidarity that animate the four days.
Organized by the Municipality of Cernusco sul Naviglio with the involvement of local associations and organizations, the Saint Joseph's Fair is an event that extends far beyond the city limits, attracting visitors from all over the Martesana region and the Milanese hinterland. A perfect opportunity to discover a corner of tradition just a few kilometers from Milan.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph's Fair, the 103rd, takes place from March 12-15 in Cernusco sul Naviglio. The theme is a journey back in time to the Belle Époque, with the gardens of Villa Alari and the town center streets animated by costumed Liberty figures. Four days of stalls, a funfair, shows, exhibitions along the Naviglio canal, and concerts.
