Devotion to the Patriarch through a triduum, a traditional altar, and an evening procession in the heart of the Sicani Mountains
The Saint Joseph Festival in Santo Stefano Quisquina is one of the most cherished events in the religious calendar of this village in the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Agrigento. Celebrated around March 19th, the liturgical solemnity of the Patriarch, the festival takes place entirely in the town's Mother Church and the streets of the historic center, where popular devotion manifests with simplicity and deep participation.
The celebrations are not entrusted to an external committee: the parish itself directly manages the proceedings, with the involvement of local associations and parish groups. This communal and intimate character is precisely what makes the Quisquina festival authentic and far removed from the spectacular nature of large-scale fairs.
The festival is preceded by a three-day triduum of prayer, dedicated to the spiritual preparation of the faithful. Each afternoon, in the Mother Church, the rosary and litanies are recited, followed by holy mass. Each day of the triduum has a specific focus: one moment is reserved for an encounter with engaged couples, another for Eucharistic adoration, while the day preceding the festival is specially dedicated to fathers and catechism children.
Among the most characteristic elements of the tradition is the blessing of the traditional Saint Joseph's Altar, set up by volunteers from the parish association in the church premises. The Saint Joseph's Altar is a widespread custom throughout Sicily, linked to vows and gratitude toward the Saint: a composition of votive breads, sweets, fruit, and local produce, symbolizing abundance and charity toward the needy. Its blessing is one of the most anticipated moments of the eve.
The culmination of the celebrations is reached on March 19th, the day of the solemnity of Saint Joseph. After the rosary and the solemn holy mass, the statue of the Saint is carried in procession through the streets of the town, accompanied by the faithful. Upon return, the final blessing and fireworks close the day in a festive atmosphere that unites the entire community.
Visiting Santo Stefano Quisquina during the Saint Joseph Festival means discovering a village with a strong bond to its rural and religious identity. The Mother Church, dating back to the 16th century, is also dedicated to Saint Joseph and houses a valuable devotional heritage. A few kilometers from the center lies the Hermitage of Quisquina, a place linked to Saint Rosalia, and all around is the pristine landscape of the Sicani Mountains, where the local dairy and gastronomic traditions complete the visitor's experience.
The parish community experienced three days of preparation in the Mother Church. Monday, March 16th, beginning of the triduum: at 5:30 PM rosary and litanies, at 6:00 PM holy mass presided over by Father Giuseppe Morreale, followed by a meeting with engaged couples. Tuesday, March 17th: rosary and litanies at 5:30 PM, mass at 6:00 PM with Eucharistic adoration. Wednesday, March 18th, a day dedicated especially to fathers: after the 6:00 PM mass, a festive moment with catechism children and, at 7:00 PM, the blessing of the traditional Saint Joseph's Altar, set up by the "Agere" association in the parish rooms.
Thursday, March 19th, the day of the festival: at 6:00 PM the rosary, at 6:30 PM the solemn holy mass presided over by Vicar General Father Giuseppe Cumbo. Following this, the procession through the streets of the town, the final blessing, and the fireworks.
The celebrations take place in the Mother Church of Santo Stefano Quisquina (AG) and in the streets of the historic center for the procession.
