The Saint John the Baptist Festival is the most cherished event in Granieri, a small rural hamlet in the municipality of Caltagirone, in the province of Catania, in the heart of Sicily. Every year at the end of August, the village gathers around its patron saint for a celebration that weaves together religious devotion, folklore, and rural conviviality, serving as the true glue for this community's identity.
The patronal feast has been celebrated on August 29th since the early 1950s, when the people of Granieri began honoring Saint John the Baptist even before the church dedicated to him was built. Over the years, the event has grown in importance, becoming a landmark for the entire village and the surrounding countryside. It was once characterized by the evocative "Cena," an auction of objects donated by the faithful, a custom that continued until the late seventies.
The highlight is the procession of the statue of Saint John the Baptist, which winds through the village streets on the evening of August 29th with the participation of civil and military authorities. The parade is accompanied by the historic Civic Senate Pageant and the "Luigi Sturzo" musical association, in a solemn atmosphere that blends faith with collective memory.
Alongside the liturgical moments, the program offers photography and art exhibitions, theatrical performances, demonstrations, band performances, and Imperial Drums, as well as evening concerts and the fireworks display that closes the festivities. As this is an agricultural village, the festival is also an occasion for the Grape Festival, featuring tastings of local products and the promotion of table grapes, a local specialty.
Granieri is a village with a strong identity that experiences its patronal feast as a true community gathering: in 2025, the festivities coincided with the celebration of the centenary of the village's foundation, with a special day titled "Happy Birthday Granieri!". Visiting the festival means immersing yourself in the authenticity of rural Sicily, amidst devotion, flavors, and hospitality, in a little-known but deeply vibrant corner of the Caltagirone territory.
At the moment, the official calendar for the 2026 edition of the Saint John the Baptist Festival in Granieri has not yet been published. Based on established tradition, the festivities are expected to take place in the last week of August, with the procession of the patron saint on August 29th and the usual blend of religious rites, folklore, music, and the Grape Festival. The dates provided are indicative and will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Caltagirone and the Parish release the final program.
