The patron saint's feast in one of the smallest villages in Valmalenco
The Saint Gottard's Feast is the patronal feast of Spriana, one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Sondrio, located at the entrance to Valmalenco. Saint Gottard, patron saint of merchants, is celebrated on May 4th.
The church dedicated to the saint dates back to the second half of the 15th century, and since then, on the occasion of the patronal feast, a fair of artisan crafts was held, which was known throughout Valtellina. On Saint Gottard's Day, a solemn mass was celebrated, followed by a procession with the confraternities, from the parish church to the small church of Madonna della Speranza and back along the path behind the church.
The Ecomuseo della Valmalenco includes the Saint Gottard's Feast among its traditional events, recognizing its identity value for the community. Participating means discovering an authentic corner of the Lombard mountains, where faith and collective memory endure over time despite the small size of the village.
In 2026, Spriana's Saint Gottard's Feast will be held in May, around the liturgical commemoration of the patron saint (May 4th), following the village's established tradition. The detailed program will be announced by the parish and the Pro Loco of Spriana in the weeks prior.
The detailed 2026 program will be announced by the parish. The traditional structure of the feast, documented by the Ecomuseo della Valmalenco, includes:
Spriana can be reached from Sondrio by taking the road up Valmalenco; the village is located on the slope overlooking the Mallero stream. Limited parking in the village center.
