About Saint Donatus Feast

Every August 7th, Pontelandolfo, a village nestled in the Sannio hills in the province of Benevento, celebrates its patron saint, Saint Donatus. The occasion blends religious solemnity—including mass, vespers, and a procession of the saint's statue through the historic center—with the popular tradition of the August fair, which has drawn locals and visitors from neighboring towns for generations. It is a deeply rooted celebration, intertwined with the village's memory and its long summer of folklore.

The patron saint of Pontelandolfo is celebrated on August 7th

In the calendar of Pontelandolfo, a village of just under two thousand inhabitants in the Sannio hills, in the province of Benevento (Campania), August 7th is an untouchable date: it is the day of Saint Donatus, the town's patron saint alongside Saint Anthony, who is celebrated on June 13th. The Saint Donatus Patronal Feast is the most heartfelt event of the Pontelandolfo summer: it opens with liturgical celebrations and fills the afternoon and evening with a fair, social gatherings, and music throughout the streets of the historic center.

An ancient cult and the chapel of Saint Donatus

Devotion to Saint Donatus in Pontelandolfo has been documented for centuries. In the San Donato area, in the open countryside, there was once a rural chapel built around 1600, with a single nave, a stone altar, and a sacristy: Cardinal Orsini, during his 1693 visit, found it in need of repairs, and a 1709 inscription commemorated a restoration. The building did not survive the damage of the August 1962 earthquake and was subsequently demolished. Today, only a small shrine remains at the entrance to the village, featuring a ceramic effigy of the saint dated 1859: the last visible sign of a devotion that the town continues to renew every year.

Procession, vespers, and fair: how the festival unfolds

The structure of the festival is rooted in an ancient custom: every August 7th, the clergy and the faithful would move in a solemn procession from the Mother Church to the chapel dedicated to the saint to celebrate vespers. A secular side has always developed around the religious one, with the fair that for three days would draw locals and many visitors from neighboring towns to the village.

  • Solemn Mass and vespers in honor of the patron saint;
  • Procession with the statue of Saint Donatus through the streets of the village;
  • Fair and market stalls, featuring typical Sannio products, sweets, and household goods;
  • Musical moments and evenings in the square, in the tradition of Campanian village festivals.

Those who remember the fairs of the past speak of stalls laden with nougat, wooden and tin toys, copper pots, farm tools, fabrics, and wicker baskets, with the buying and selling of animals enlivening the market: an echo of the economic function the festival has served for generations in the upper Sannio region.

August 7, 1861, when the festival met history

The patron saint's date is linked to one of the most dramatic pages of local history. On August 7, 1861, while Archpriest Don Epifanio De Gregorio was celebrating mass in honor of the saint, the bandit leader Cosimo Giordano entered Pontelandolfo: this triggered the chain of events that led to the massacre of August 14, 1861, when Piedmontese troops burned the village and nearby Casalduni. Experiencing the Saint Donatus festival therefore means walking through a village that has made the memory of those days an essential part of its identity.

Inside the long folklore summer

August 7th falls in the heart of the Eco-Folkloristic Week, the historic event of Pontelandolfo which reaches its 63rd edition in 2026 and runs from July 30th to August 16th, with a new focus on environmental sustainability promoted by the municipal administration. Dances, music, colors, traditions, and popular culture provide the backdrop for the patronal feast, in a summer that the Municipality of Pontelandolfo completes with other popular events, such as Borgolandolfo, the Beer Fest, and, in the spring, the Italian Cheese Throwing Championship.

What to know about the 2026 edition

At the time of our check, the secular program for 2026 had not yet been published: neither the Municipality nor the local tourist portal had released flyers or schedules. The liturgical recurrence remains fixed on August 7th, but it is prudent to check the times for mass, the procession, and performances a few days before the event.

Pontelandolfo, a village to discover

Those who arrive for the festival will find a compact historic center, dominated by the 12th-century medieval tower, with the church of Annunziata Antica (15th century) and the chapel of Saint Roch (17th-18th century). The municipal territory is divided into fifteen hamlets scattered among hills, streams, and beech forests, in a corner of inland Campania that lives on agriculture and typical products. Pontelandolfo is also a town of emigration: communities of Pontelandolfo origin in Waterbury, Connecticut, have continued to organize their own Saint Donatus Feast, a sign of how the cult of the patron saint remains a thread that unites the village to its children scattered around the world.

Saint Donatus Feast — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Pontelandolfo patronal feast is expected on its traditional date, August 7th, the day of Saint Donatus. The secular program—times for mass and the procession, the fair, and performances in the square—had not yet been published by the Municipality or the local tourist portal at the time of our check. The recurrence falls within the 63rd Eco-Folkloristic Week, scheduled from July 30th to August 16th, 2026.

2026 Edition: dates and program awaiting confirmation

For 2026, we have not found any official communication regarding the Saint Donatus Patronal Feast of Pontelandolfo: at the time of verification, the Municipality's website did not report events related to the patron saint, and the local tourist portal had not published flyers or schedules. The date indicated in this entry, August 7th, corresponds to the fixed liturgical recurrence of the town's patron saint, but should be considered as a reference and not a confirmed program.

The event takes place in a particularly lively period for the Sannio village: the 63rd Eco-Folkloristic Week occupies the calendar from July 30th to August 16th, 2026, with the new approach dedicated to environmental sustainability announced by the municipal administration. Dances, music, folklore, and the promotion of the territory therefore accompany the days of the patronal feast.

Those who wish to participate would do well to check the channels of the Municipality of Pontelandolfo and local associations in the days immediately preceding the event: as often happens in the patronal feasts of small towns in inland Campania, the full program is released at the last minute, with posters displayed in the town and posts on the organizing committee's social media.

Practical information — Saint Donatus Feast

How to get there

Pontelandolfo is located in the upper Sannio, in the province of Benevento: the most convenient way to reach it is by car, traveling along the provincial roads that climb the hills north of the provincial capital. Public transport is limited to provincial bus lines, with reduced service on holidays.

Admission and costs

Religious celebrations, the procession, and the fair take place in the church and along the village streets: access is free and open to all. Any evening performances in the square are also, by tradition, free of charge.

Tips

  • Park outside the historic center: during the procession and the fair, the internal streets are closed to traffic.
  • On August 7th, temperatures are high in the early afternoon: bring water and a hat if you follow the procession.
  • Take advantage of your visit to the village to see the medieval tower and taste typical Sannio products at the stalls and local establishments.
  • Check for updated schedules on the channels of the Municipality of Pontelandolfo and the local tourist portal, as the secular program is often released only a few days before the festival.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the village is limited (agritourisms, B&Bs, and holiday homes in the surrounding area); for a wider choice, you can stay in Benevento or in the towns of the Matese and Titerno areas, a short drive away.
