Blessed bread distributed house to house on June 13th
On June 13th, the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua, Chiauci (province of Isernia) celebrates the Bread Festival, one of the most heartfelt and original traditions of Alto Molise. From the morning onwards, the village comes alive with the joy and desire for togetherness that characterize this event, capable of involving the entire community.
The tradition dates back to the 19th century: according to local memory, it was started by an emigrant who, having made his fortune, wanted to help the village families living in extreme poverty. The rite is linked to a past marked by high infant mortality: parents would bring their children to be weighed, donating a quantity of grain equal to their weight, and the flour obtained was used to make loaves to be distributed to inhabitants and animals. Even today, sixteen families, on a rotating basis, prepare the bread for the entire community, along with a hearty breakfast that follows the blessing by the parish priest.
The most evocative moment is the procession of women, who parade carrying large wicker baskets full of bread and decorated with lilies, the saint's symbolic flower, on their heads. The most skilled and devout can carry up to 15 kilos of bread in perfect balance, with a steady gait. A loaf is given to each family, and one is intended for the animals, in a gesture of sharing that renews the community spirit of Chiauci every year.
The Saint Anthony's Bread Festival is renewed in Chiauci on June 13, 2026. After the blessing by the parish priest, the loaves prepared in rotation by the village families are distributed to all inhabitants — one per family and one for the animals. The central moment is the procession of women with wicker baskets full of bread and adorned with lilies.
On the morning of June 13th, Mass and the blessing of the bread take place, followed by the procession of women with wicker baskets decorated with lilies and the distribution of loaves house to house (one per family, one for the animals). The day also includes a hearty community breakfast. Detailed times will be announced by the parish. Program subject to change.
