Over 90 years of hunting tradition and bird song
In Almenno San Salvatore, a municipality in the province of Bergamo about a dozen kilometres from the Orobic capital, the Sagra degli Uccelli is a historic event: the first edition, then called "National Bird Festival", dates back to 1934. More than ninety editions later, it remains one of the most defining appointments in the local calendar.
Almenno San Salvatore boasts a long and unique tradition linked to bird trapping (uccellagione), so much so that it has earned the historic recognition of "Universitร degli Uccellatori" (University of Bird Catchers). The festival celebrates this cultural heritage, now presented in terms of the protection and knowledge of the world of birds.
The programme takes place at Parco Sant'Uberto and features the characteristic bird song competitions, hunting dog exhibitions, falconry demonstrations, and performances by the "chioccolatori", skilled imitators of bird calls. The event is organised by Federcaccia (FIDC) of Bergamo.
For those visiting the area, Almenno San Salvatore also offers a remarkable historical-artistic heritage, from the churches of San Giorgio and San Nicola to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Castello. The Sagra degli Uccelli is an opportunity to discover a unique tradition in the Bergamo province.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra degli Uccelli is expected on a Sunday in August, following the tradition of this historic event animating Parco Sant'Uberto in Almenno San Salvatore.
The programme will once again feature the characteristic elements of the festival: bird song competitions, hunting dog exhibitions, falconry demonstrations, and "chioccolatori" performances. The precise date will be announced by Federcaccia of Bergamo.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition will be announced by Federcaccia of Bergamo. The traditional structure includes bird song competitions, hunting dog exhibitions, falconry demonstrations, and "chioccolatori" performances at Parco Sant'Uberto.
Almenno San Salvatore can be reached by car from Bergamo along the road to Valle Imagna and Val Brembana. The festival takes place at Parco Sant'Uberto.
