A weekend of contemporary art in Rome's galleries
Rome Gallery Weekend - Contemporanea is the annual spring event that shines a spotlight on the capital's private gallery scene. For an entire weekend, Rome's most prestigious contemporary art galleries open to the public with a coordinated program of exhibitions, openings, performances, site-specific projects, and talks. The city transforms into a vast, open-air exhibition space, inviting visitors to follow routes that connect diverse neighborhoods, from the historic center to Testaccio, Trastevere, and San Lorenzo.
The title Contemporanea pays homage to the legendary exhibition curated by Achille Bonito Oliva in 1973 at the Villa Borghese parking garageโa milestone in the city's cultural history. Over fifty years later, this event seeks to reconnect with that creative energy, reaffirming the vitality of the Roman art scene and restoring focus to the daily work of gallerists and their dialogue with Italian and international artists.
The fourth edition took place from Thursday, May 14, to Sunday, May 17, 2026. A highlight was the joint program launch with the Gallery Night on Thursday, May 14 (6 PM to 8 PM), featuring vernissages and new exhibition openings. Throughout the weekend, the 32 participating galleries offered extended hours: 10 AM to 8 PM on Friday the 15th and Saturday the 16th, and 10 AM to 6 PM on Sunday the 17th. Highly anticipated shows included Francesca Woodman at Gagosian and a solo exhibition by Carlos Garaicoa at Galleria Continua, alongside projects at galleries such as Federica Schiavo, Ex Elettrofonica, Monitor, Lorcan O'Neill, Anna Marra, Andrea Festa Fine Art, and many others. A parallel program of talks and side events was hosted at Studio San Lorenzo and Soho House Rome.
Promoted by the Associazione Contemporanea, Rome Gallery Weekend showcases the cityโs gallery network and helps position Rome and the Lazio region on the national and international contemporary art calendar. Supported by city institutions and in collaboration with the Municipality of Rome, the event has become a highly anticipated date for collectors, enthusiasts, scholars, and curious visitors alike, capturing the richness and variety of today's artistic production.
