The weekend when the Rolli Palaces open their doors
The Rolli Days are one of the most beloved cultural events in Genoa: twice a year (once in spring, once in autumn) the famous Rolli Palaces open their doors to visitors. These are the noble residences of the Strade Nuove, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, so opulent that they were included in official lists (the "rolli") to host illustrious guests and heads of state visiting the Republic in turn. Since 2006, the system of the Strade Nuove and the Rolli Palaces has been a UNESCO World Heritage site.
During the spring edition, dozens of palaces, historic villas, archives, and libraries become accessible, many of which are normally closed to the public. Guiding visitors are young scientific communicators from all over Italy, who talk about architecture, art history, diplomacy, and economics through the stories of these residences. It is a journey into the heart of aristocratic Liguria, amidst frescoes, stuccoes, galleries, and secret gardens.
Among the most evocative events is Palazzi in Luce (Palaces in Light): on the evenings of the weekend, the palaces overlooking Via Garibaldi, Piazza della Meridiana, and Piazza Fontane Marose illuminate their noble floors and open their large windows, offering spectacular views. For families, there are Rolli Kids, with games and interactive tours designed for children, as well as concerts, performances, and visits to the city's restoration workshops.
More than just an extraordinary opening, the Rolli Days are a way to give back extraordinary heritage to the community and to tell the story of Genoa's identity as a great European capital of the Baroque. Each edition attracts tens of thousands of visitors, many from outside the region.
The spring 2026 edition of the Rolli Days coincides with the 20th anniversary of UNESCO recognition of the Strade Nuove and Rolli Palaces, and therefore takes on a special significance. The chosen theme is "Sharing is Protecting", emphasizing the responsibility to open heritage to the world and preserve it.
From March 27 to 29, over 50 sites will open, including palaces, historic villas, sacred buildings, and archives, accompanied by 102 young scientific communicators from all over Italy. Among the new features is the opening of the Grotta Doria Pavese, restored thanks to the Ministry of Culture.
The palaces are concentrated along Via Garibaldi and in the streets of the historic center, reachable on foot and by metro (Darsena and San Giorgio stops) and AMT buses.
Admission to the palaces is free, but many require online booking, which opens in the days preceding the event. It is recommended to book in advance for the most requested palaces.
