The regional final of the Goat Battles in the Tour d'Hérèraz arena
The Batailles des Chèvres (goat battles) are a traditional event typical of the Aosta Valley, akin to the more famous Batailles de Reines among cows. The goats face each other in natural encounters, following a hierarchical instinct inherent to the species, and the regional competition culminates the season with a grand final. Since 2023, this final has been held in Perloz, in the Lower Aosta Valley, in the evocative natural arena of Tour d'Hérèraz.
The competition is structured as a series of qualifying rounds held between May and October in eight municipalities of the Aosta Valley — including Gressoney-Saint-Jean, Pont-Saint-Martin, Champorcher, Issime, Fontainemore, Donnas, Issogne, and Montjovet. The highest-ranked goats advance to the regional final in Perloz, where they compete for the title in various categories.
The competition features five categories: Prima, Seconda, Terza, Strabime, and Bime. The Strabime category, recently introduced, is reserved for goats aged 2-3 years and aims to encourage breeders to enter younger animals, allowing them to compete against peers rather than experienced adults. The event is organized by the Association Combats des chèvres.
Attending the final of the Batailles des Chèvres in Perloz means immersing yourself in a tradition that tells the story of the rural world and mountain farming in the Aosta Valley. A popular, free, and deeply identity-forming event that celebrates the bond between the communities of the Aosta Valley and their animals.
The 2026 edition of the regional final of the Batailles des Chèvres takes place in Perloz, in the natural arena of Tour d'Hérèraz. 160 qualified goats (20 from each of the eight qualifying rounds) plus the 4 reigning champions will access the final.
The novelty for 2026 concerns the format: the number of places for the final drops from 8 to 4 per category, in a structural reorganization of the event. The Strabime category, dedicated to goats aged 2-3 years, is confirmed alongside Prima, Seconda, Terza, and Bime. The season kicks off on May 9 with the first qualifying round in Gressoney-Saint-Jean.
Event organized by the Association Combats des chèvres, chaired by Alessio Maneglia.
Perloz is located in the Lower Aosta Valley, near Pont-Saint-Martin (the nearest motorway exit and train station). The final takes place in the natural arena of Tour d'Hérèraz.
The regional final is scheduled for Sunday, November 14, 2026.
Traditional event with free admission. Appropriate clothing for the autumn mountain season is recommended.
