Walking through the trenches of the Isonzo Karst in memory of the Great War
The Isonzo Karst is a land of white stone, sinkholes, and silence, but also of memory: over a century ago, some of the fiercest battles of the Great War were fought here. The Redipuglia March, which starts every April 25th from the Baita di Polazzo, a hamlet of Fogliano Redipuglia, invites you to rediscover these places by walking slowly through trenches, pathways, and monuments, on a route that is both a nature excursion and a pilgrimage of remembrance.
The march, non-competitive and open to people of all ages and fitness levels, offers three routes: an easy 7 km route suitable for families, an intermediate 13 km route, and a more challenging 25 km route. The paths cross the territories of Fogliano Redipuglia, Ronchi dei Legionari, Sagrado, and Doberdò del Lago, passing by the Redipuglia Military Shrine, trenches, and numerous World War I sites dotting the plateau.
Rest stops and assistance points are provided along the route, in an atmosphere of sharing that makes this march much more than a simple hike. At the end, at the Baita di Polazzo, there will be an award ceremony and the traditional pasta dish for participants. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Fogliano Redipuglia, promotes 'memory, landscape, and slow movement,' inviting reflection on the value of peace by walking precisely where history has left its mark.
Between the Redipuglia Shrine—Italy's largest monument to the fallen—and Lake Doberdò, the Isonzo Karst offers unique landscapes and extraordinary biodiversity. The Redipuglia March is the ideal opportunity to discover it at a slow pace, combining nature, history, and contemplation.
The 2026 edition of the Redipuglia March is scheduled for Saturday, April 25th.
