The Ratha Yatra in Rome

The Ratha Yatra is one of India's oldest festivals: the name means «chariot journey» and refers to the solemn procession during which a large, elaborately decorated sacred chariot is pulled by hand by devotees through the city streets, accompanied by singing, dancing, and flowers. For several years, this ancient tradition has also reached Rome, brought to the heart of the capital by the ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) community, the Hare Krishna movement. The chosen setting is one of the city's most famous and spectacular squares, Piazza del Popolo, located in the historic center of Rome, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region.

The Chariot and the Deities

The heart of the festival is the chariot, which carries three smiling, large-eyed deities: Jagannath, the «Lord of the Universe», his brother Baladeva, and his sister Subhadra. Decorated with colorful fabrics, garlands, and flowers, the chariot is slowly pulled across the square as participants tug on long ropes: a symbolic gesture that, according to tradition, brings everyone closer to spirituality and shared joy.

Music, Dance, and Prasadam

Throughout the event, kirtan and devotional songs resonate, accompanied by drums, cymbals, and traditional instruments, while dancers in colorful attire bring the procession to life. There is also the distribution of prasadam, the vegetarian food offered and shared with all attendees, a central element of this culture's hospitality. The event thus unites spirituality, music, dance, and gastronomy into one great festive moment.
