The popular religious feast of the patron saint in the heart of Alcamo
In Alcamo, in the province of Trapani, Saint Francis of Paola is venerated with special affection: the locals call him simply "lu Santu Patri" (the Holy Father), a sign of a devotion rooted in the city's fabric for centuries. His feast falls every year on the second Sunday after Easter and represents one of the most anticipated events in Alcamo's religious and popular tradition, alongside the "Patruciniu" that closes the month of April.
The highlight of the festival is the procession that, on Sunday afternoon, accompanies the saint's statue along the streets of Alcamo's historic center. The float, carried on shoulders amidst prayers, hymns, and the sound of brass bands, travels through the parish district in a pageant that unites believers of all ages. For the occasion, the streets are filled with festive lights and market stalls, following the classic pattern of a Sicilian village festival, where sacred ritual and secular celebration coexist on the same day.
The cult has its heart in the Church of Saint Francis of Paola, on Via Francesco Crispi, originally dedicated to the Most Holy Crucifix. The building was founded in 1542, when the nobleman Pietro Tabone obtained land in the "Calcare" district from the Jurors of Alcamo to build a chapel, which was erected around 1550. In 1596, the church, still incomplete, was ceded to the Order of Minims of Saint Francis of Paola, who built the convent next to it. The Baroque facade with its convex design from 1695 is considered a typical example of Sicilian Rococo. After the order was suppressed in 1870, the church was elevated to a parish on July 26, 1926, retaining the title of the saint from Paola.
Saint Francis of Paola, founder of the Order of Minims and proclaimed patron saint of Italian seafaring folk in 1943, is venerated in numerous towns across Sicily. The devotion in Alcamo is part of this wider island tradition and links Alcamo to centers like Trapani, Erice, Marsala, and Castelvetrano, where the "Santu Patri" is celebrated at the same time of year.
Organized by the Saint Francis of Paola Parish, the festival is much more than a liturgical appointment: it is a moment of collective identity for the neighborhood and the entire city of Alcamo. The religious celebrations, popular festivities, market stalls, and the evening atmosphere of the lights make the day of the Santu Patri an opportunity to reunite, pass down tradition, and renew the bond with the patron saint.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Francis of Paola festival in Alcamo took place on Sunday, April 19, in line with the tradition that sets the celebration on the second Sunday after Easter. Once again this year, the Saint Francis of Paola Parish oversaw the "Santu Patri" festivities, which culminated in the afternoon procession that accompanied the saint's float along the streets of Alcamo's historic center.
As is customary, the neighborhood around the parish came alive with market stalls and festive lights, while the community gathered around its patron saint in a day that weaves together religious devotion and popular celebration. The event is part of Alcamo's April calendar, marked by religious tradition, alongside the subsequent "Patruciniu" feast.
The detailed program with the times of the liturgical celebrations and the procession is released each year by the Saint Francis of Paola Parish in the days preceding the festival. The central moment remains the afternoon procession of the saint's statue through the streets of Alcamo's historic center on the second Sunday after Easter (in 2026, Sunday, April 19).
