The ancient village of Pisciotta transforms into an open-air museum featuring live music, art, and the flavors of the Cilento region.
Every summer, Pisciotta SMS – Flavors, Music and History lights up the historic center of Pisciotta, a town in the Province of Salerno, Campania, overlooking the Cilento coast. For a few evenings, the village transforms into an open-air museum: alleys, courtyards, chapels, and small squares become stops on a guided tour that weaves together architectural heritage, live music, and local gastronomy. The event is promoted by the Accademia Nazionale Eleatica of Caprioli in collaboration with the Pro Loco «Alessandro Pinto» of Pisciotta.
The heart of the event is a route winding through various locations in the old town. At each stop, the Academy's musicians perform different genres, guiding visitors through the village's historical and architectural heritage. Small groups depart regularly from the info-point in the main square throughout the evening, allowing each party to listen, observe, and learn about the village without the crowds, in an intimate atmosphere that is part of the show itself.
Venues featured in recent editions include the Palazzo Marchesale, the Chapel of San Michele, the courtyard of Palazzo Mandina, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and the Chapel of the Mercede: a collection of civil and religious architecture that reflects centuries of Pisciotta's history. At each location, the repertoire shifts, ranging from early music to sacred compositions, and from wind ensembles to organ pieces.
The route concludes on the Way of Taste and Craftsmanship, a space dedicated to typical products and the excellence of small Cilento businesses. Here, visitors meet producers directly among tasting stalls and artisanal offerings that complete the evening experience. It is the most convivial moment of the night, where music gives way to conversation and authentic local flavors.
The guided tour includes a temporary exhibition dedicated to the works of José Ortega, a painter with deep ties to the Cilento region, created in collaboration with the Municipality of San Giovanni a Piro. The exhibition adds a visual dimension to the narrative: after the music and before the tastings, visitors traverse a chapter of contemporary art that dialogues with the ancient stones of the village.
Pisciotta is one of the most characteristic villages on the Cilento coast: perched above the sea, it retains an urban layout of stairs, arches, and sudden open spaces that naturally lend themselves to an evening visit. Pisciotta SMS leverages this vocation, replacing the classic town square festival with a more curated format where listening and discovery are just as important as the food. For those spending their holidays between Palinuro, Marina di Camerota, and Casal Velino, it is one of the most original evenings of the Cilento summer.
The event takes place entirely on foot in the historic center: comfortable shoes are essential, as the route alternates between stone steps and alleys. Staggered departures make it useful to arrive at the info-point a little ahead of your desired time, especially on busier nights. Those wishing to combine dinner with the itinerary can book at one of the village's partner restaurants, which offer special conditions for participants of the guided tour.
Three summer evenings, on July 22, 29, and 30, 2026, brought Pisciotta SMS – Flavors, Music and History back to the ancient center of the Cilento town, in the Province of Salerno. The initiative, promoted by the Accademia Nazionale Eleatica of Caprioli with the Pro Loco «Alessandro Pinto», offered a sensory itinerary to discover the artistic, historical, and gastronomic beauties of the village.
The historical-musical route was divided into several stations in the old town, where the Academy's musicians performed different genres, accompanying groups through the village's heritage. A new feature this year was the temporary exhibition dedicated to the works of José Ortega, created in collaboration with the Municipality of San Giovanni a Piro. The itinerary concluded on the Way of Taste and Craftsmanship, a space reserved for typical products and small Cilento businesses.
Those who booked and dined at one of the village establishments participating in the initiative received a discount on the guided tour entrance fee. Recommended venues included: Osteria del Borgo, MalaBar, Le Tre Fontane, Cantina Lamadé Cilento Artigiano, Ristorante Antichi Sapori, I Tre Gufi, Locanda del Fiume, and Pizzeria I Tigli.
