The urban music and dancehall festival in Poggio Picenze for the Music Festival
The Pirate Music Fest is the signature music celebration of Poggio Picenze, a small town in the province of L'Aquila nestled in the hills of inland Abruzzo. Established in 2023, the festival takes place every summer in the Municipal Amphitheater of the Villa Comunaleโa scenic open-air venue adjacent to Piazzale Salvatore Massonioโand has quickly become one of the most anticipated events in the area for urban music lovers.
Pirate Music Fest is a project entirely driven by a group of young people from Poggio Picenze active in local volunteering and associations, in collaboration with the Frequenze association and under the patronage of the Municipality of Poggio Picenze. The event is part of the national Festa della Musica, celebrated across Italy around the summer solstice, and is built on the core values of accessibility and inclusion: admission is always free, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability and safety.
The Pirate Music Fest program spans hip-hop, rap, freestyle, reggae, and dancehall, alternating emerging local artists from the L'Aquila area with established national acts. Over the years, the amphitheater stage has hosted artists such as Babaman, AlienDee, Ensi, and Villa Ada Posse. Beyond the concerts, the festival offers DJ sets, a dub area, music education workshops, and street art labs, with the participation of organizations like Nati nelle Note and Orbeat.
During the festival evenings, food trucks serve drinks and traditional Abruzzese specialties, bringing the Villa Comunale to life in a festive, communal atmosphere. Ample parking nearby makes the amphitheater easily accessible, while the rolling hills surrounding Poggio Picenze provide a stunning backdrop for summer nights.
With its free-entry format, quality programming, and participatory spirit, Pirate Music Fest has become a landmark for the youth music scene in the L'Aquila area and a perfect opportunity to discover Poggio Picenze and its territory in the heart of Abruzzo.
The fourth edition of the Pirate Music Fest was held on June 25 and 26, 2026, at the Municipal Amphitheater of the Villa Comunale in Poggio Picenze (AQ), spanning two consecutive days for the first time. The festival shifted its focus toward reggae and dancehall sounds: the first evening featured Villa Ada Posse in Dancehall Style, while the second was headlined by MamaMarjas. The program alternated live concerts with a Dub Area, DJ sets, workshops, and a food & drink area, maintaining free admission and the eco-friendly spirit of the event. This edition confirmed the festival's growth within the musical landscape of the L'Aquila province and Abruzzo.
Poggio Picenze is located in the province of L'Aquila, along the SS17 road, about 15 km from the regional capital. By car, it can be reached via the A24/A25 motorway (L'Aquila Est exit). The amphitheater is located in the Villa Comunale, at Piazzale Salvatore Massonio 38.
The event is free of charge. Concerts take place in the late afternoon and evening. Food trucks with local Abruzzese specialties and ample parking are available nearby.
