Pignarul in te Tor

The fire that tells the future

In Friuli, the night of Epiphany is lit by hundreds of fires: these are the pignarûi, the large bonfires that tradition says can predict the year based on the direction of the smoke and sparks. In Savorgnano del Torre, a hamlet of Povoletto in the hilly Friuli region along the Torre River, this ancient rite is revived every January 5th with the Pignarûl in te Tor, organized by the Pro Loco Savorgnano del Torre.

A night of fire and tradition

The event takes place at the Parco te tor, in via Cantore, where the community gathers around the large pile of wood ready to be lit. The highlight is the lighting of the pignarûl, accompanied by entertainment groups and a spectacular final fireworks display that illuminates the Friulian winter sky.

The flavours of the Friulian winter

As with every Friulian festival, there is no shortage of conviviality around the table: the event offers tastings of typical regional products – salami with vinegar, tripe, pasta and beans – accompanied by wine and hot drinks like mulled wine, perfect for warming up on Epiphany night.

A tradition that is renewed

Although it is a relatively young event, the Pignarûl in te Tor is part of a centuries-old tradition that links all of Friuli to the Epiphany fire. It is a moment of strong identity for the community of Savorgnano and for the entire Povoletto area, where the rite of fire becomes an occasion for celebration, remembrance, and good wishes for the new year.
