Floats, costumes, and local festivities in the village of the twelve towers, in the province of Caserta
The Pietramelara Carnival is the most anticipated winter event in Pietramelara, a town of about four thousand inhabitants in the province of Caserta, in the Campania region. Organized by the Pro Loco Pietramelara APS, the event has held a central place in the town's calendar for decades: by 2013, the festival had already reached its forty-second edition, a sign of a deep-rooted tradition passed down from generation to generation. This is not a carnival built for mass tourism, but a community celebration made of volunteer work, competing neighborhoods, and families taking to the streets together.
The most anticipated moment is the parade of allegorical floats. Each float is born months in advance in the town's garages, depots, and warehouses, where groups of builders work patiently on structures, papier-mâché, colors, and mechanisms. It is entirely self-funded craftsmanship carried out in their spare time, which each year returns a small treasure of ingenuity and creativity to the community. Themes change from edition to edition, drawing from popular imagination, cartoons, cinema, and current events: in 2025, for example, four floats paraded dedicated to Super Mario Bros, the Minions, Donald Trump, and Jurassic Park.
The structure of the event is well-established: the parades take place over two days, Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, when the floats travel through the town center accompanied by masked groups, loud music, confetti, and streamers. Children, teenagers, and adults in costume dance behind the floats, while the public gathers along the sides of the road. The final day is traditionally the most attended, as it is when the results of the float competition are tallied.
The festival gains a unique charm thanks to its setting. Pietramelara rises in the shadow of Monte Maggiore and preserves a medieval village of Lombard origin, made of narrow alleys, stone staircases, and a city wall reinforced by twelve towers, hence the nickname "village of the twelve towers." The town still carries the memory of the Aragonese siege of 1496, which deeply marked its history and subsequent reconstruction. Those arriving for the Carnival can therefore combine the festival with a walk through the historic center and the discovery of a territory—the Alto Casertano between the Volturno and the Matese—rich in nature, history, and genuine rustic cuisine.
The Pietramelara Carnival is above all an opportunity for social gathering. Masked parties, musical moments, and initiatives dedicated to children, promoted by the Pro Loco together with local associations, revolve around the parade. The parades take place along public streets and are open to anyone who wishes to attend: it is a festival that asks for participation, not a ticket. For local families, it is a ritual that marks the year; for visitors, it is an authentic way to get to know Campanian folk traditions far from the major tourist circuits.
The dates follow the mobile calendar of Carnival and therefore fall between February and early March. In 2026, the parades were held on Sunday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 17; in 2025, they were on Sunday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 4. It is advisable to check the updated program on the social media channels of the Pro Loco Pietramelara APS, which publishes times and routes in the weeks leading up to the event each year.
The 2026 Pietramelara Carnival returned with its historic formula: two days of parades, Sunday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 17, dedicated to allegorical floats and costumes. The town center of Pietramelara, in the province of Caserta, was filled with colors, music, and confetti, with masked groups following the floats handcrafted by the town's builders. The event was directed once again by the Pro Loco Pietramelara APS, which has been curating one of the most heartfelt folk festivals in inland Campania for decades.
The program for the 2026 edition was spread over two days:
Detailed times and routes were released by the Pro Loco Pietramelara APS on their social media channels in the days leading up to the festival.
The parades take place along the streets of the town center of Pietramelara (CE), in Campania. The Town Hall is located at Piazza Municipio 1, 81051 Pietramelara.
By car: from Rome or Naples, take the A1 motorway to the Caianello exit, then follow the signs for Vairano Patenora and Pietramelara; from the Caserta area, head up towards the Alto Casertano. By train: the most convenient station is Vairano-Caianello, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, connected to the town by bus. Nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino, about an hour's drive away.
The parades take place on the street and are freely accessible to the public; there is no entry fee.
Event suitable for families with children. Warm and comfortable clothing is recommended, as you will be outdoors for a long time, and arrive early to park: during the parades, some streets in the center are closed to traffic.
