About Music Festival

Every year around June 21st, Pesco Sannita joins the European Music Day, transforming Piazza Umberto I into an open-air stage. The local Pro Loco association celebrates this musical day with a vintage car and motorcycle rally, parades through the village streets, accordion gatherings, and tastings of traditional dishes. It is a simple, community-driven event with free admission that showcases the musical and rural identity of this corner of the Benevento province in inland Campania.

The Music Festival comes to Pesco Sannita

On June 21st, the summer solstice, the Music Festival is celebrated throughout Europe: a day when streets, squares, and courtyards open up to musicians, making music free and accessible to all. For years, Pesco Sannita, a town of just under two thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, in the heart of inland Campania, has participated in this event with a celebration organized by the local Pro Loco and community associations.

This is not a massive festival with imposing stages and high-profile acts, but something rarer: a day when the village reclaims its own musical dimension—that of accordions, serenades, and brass bands—and performs it outdoors for everyone to enjoy.

Piazza Umberto I, the village's natural stage

The heart of the event is Piazza Umberto I, the largest and brightest space in Pesco Sannita, which the town has always used as a theater for its festivals. This is where the Music Festival is concentrated: instruments are tuned in the afternoon, tasting tables are set up along the sides, and by evening, the square fills up without the need for tickets or reservations.

The ancient village layout develops around the square, with alleys climbing toward the upper part of the town. In past editions, the festivities have often spilled out of the square, with processions and parades winding through the center and the surrounding countryside.

Accordions, vintage vehicles, and parades

The formula developed by the Pro Loco combines two passions deeply felt in the Sannio region: folk music and vintage engines. In recent editions, the day has been structured as follows:

  • Vintage car and motorcycle rally in the afternoon, with Vespas and historic vehicles on display in the town;
  • Parade of vehicles through the village streets and surroundings, with stops in neighboring towns—in 2024, the mid-route aperitif was held in San Marco dei Cavoti;
  • Accordion gathering, the most iconic moment of the festival: musicians gather to improvise tarantellas and folk dances;
  • Tasting of traditional dishes to close the day, organized by Pro Loco volunteers.

It is a deliberately simple program that changes slightly each year and is finalized just weeks before the event: those wishing to participate should follow the Pro Loco channels, where posters are published periodically.

The flavors of the Fortore in the square

The gastronomic aspect is not just a side note. Pesco Sannita is a land of olive groves and vineyards: the ortice olive variety, typical of the Benevento area, is grown here, and aglianicone wine is produced. The village festivals feature products from this local agriculture, along with the handmade pasta that gives its name to the other major Pesco Sannita event, the Paccozza Festival in August. During the Music Festival, the tasting is informal, more of a shared snack than a formal dinner.

Pesco Sannita, a village to discover

Perched at about 390 meters above sea level between the Tammaro valley and the Fortore hills, Pesco Sannita preserves traces of its Lombard past—the name refers to "pesco," a fortified cliff—and adopted its current name in 1947. It is a town that can be visited in an hour, but it offers an authentic glimpse into inland Campania, far from the coast and mass tourism circuits. In 2018, the village gained national attention by hosting the start of a Giro d'Italia stage heading toward the Gran Sasso d'Italia.

The patron saints are Saint Nicholas, celebrated on December 6th, and Saint Reparata, on August 19th: two dates that, along with the musical Carnival in February and Christmas events, complete the calendar of local festivals organized by the Pro Loco.

Why it's worth it

The Pesco Sannita Music Festival does not promise big names. It promises something different and harder to find: a community that plays for itself and welcomes those who arrive. For those traveling through the Sannio region in June, it is an opportunity to see a real village on a festive evening, without filters and without tickets.

Music Festival — edition 2026

For 2026, the Pesco Sannita Music Festival has not yet been announced with official dates. The national event falls as always on June 21st, but as of the writing of this sheet, neither the Pro Loco nor the Festa della Musica Italia portal has published an event registered for the Sannio municipality. Verification is ongoing: information will be updated as soon as the 2026 edition poster is released.

The 2026 Music Festival in Pesco Sannita is currently an awaited but unconfirmed event. The national calendar for the event sets the day for June 21st, as it is throughout Europe, and the 2026 Italian edition is dedicated to the theme of the voice of places and the role of choral groups in the territories. For the village in the province of Benevento, however, we have not found any official announcement: the Campania regional page on the Festa della Musica Italia portal does not list any events registered for Pesco Sannita.

The festival remains a consolidated tradition of the town, enlivened by the Pro Loco of Pesco Sannita in Piazza Umberto I and built over time around three recurring elements: folk music with the accordion gathering, the vintage car and motorcycle rally with a parade through the village streets, and the tasting of typical Sannio products. None of this is confirmed for 2026, and we do not anticipate dates, times, or names that have not been made public by the organizers.

Those who wish to participate can follow the Pro Loco's social media channels, where in previous years the poster appeared a few weeks before the event.

Practical information — Music Festival

How to get there

By car: Pesco Sannita is located about twenty kilometers north of Benevento, on the hills separating the Tammaro valley from the Fortore. From Benevento, follow the signs toward San Marco dei Cavoti and Fortore. The village is small: it is best to leave your car in the free spaces at the entrance to the town and continue on foot toward Piazza Umberto I.

By train: the nearest station is Benevento, connected to Naples, Caserta, and Foggia; from there, the journey is completed by car or local bus services, which may be very limited on holidays.

By plane: the reference airport is Naples Capodichino, about 80 kilometers away, a little over an hour and a half drive.

Admission and costs

The Music Festival is a free-participation event: in Pesco Sannita, music in the square has always been free. Any gastronomic tastings and registrations for the vintage vehicle rally may require a small fee, which will be announced by the Pro Loco on the annual poster.

Where to sleep and eat

In Pesco Sannita, accommodation is limited to a few options, including farmhouses and guest houses in the area. Those wanting more choice can stay in Benevento or nearby villages in the Fortore, such as San Marco dei Cavoti. For dinner, it is worth relying on local cuisine: handmade pasta, ortice olive oil, and Sannio wines.

Tips

  • Dates and programs are often known only in June: check the Pro Loco di Pesco Sannita Facebook page before leaving.
  • The altitude of 390 meters makes June evenings cool: bring a light jacket.
  • If you are interested in vintage engines, inquire in advance about how to join the rally.
  • Those staying in the area can combine their visit in August with the Paccozza Festival, the other iconic village celebration.
