On August 14, 2025, on the eve of Ferragosto, Castel del Monte celebrated its Pecora alla Callara Festival in the heart of the Gran Sasso mountain village. The absolute star was the pecora alla callara, cooked for hours in large open-air copper cauldrons with aromatic herbs, garlic, and tomatoes, and served with crusty homemade bread and local wine.
The evening featured food stalls with typical products of pastoral Abruzzo, from Canestrato di Castel del Monte to ricotta, artisan markets, live music, and folk performances. There was also entertainment with traditional games for children, in a festive atmosphere that confirmed the event as one of the most beloved of the summer in Castel del Monte.
