The patronal feast of Canistro, in the heart of the Valle Roveto
On August 29th, Canistro, a village of a few hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 554 meters in the Valle Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila, gathers around its patron saint: San Giovanni Decollato. The date coincides with the liturgical memorial of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, which the Church celebrates annually. It is the most important event on the local calendar, drawing back emigrants and the sons and daughters of Canistro scattered across Italy and abroad.
The heart of the day is religious: the solemn mass in the parish church and the procession that accompanies the statue of the saint along the streets of the historic center, winding through the old stone houses. As the procession passes, adorned with lights and banners, the community gathers in prayer, in a ritual passed down through generations that represents the most authentic identity of the village.
The devotional aspect is complemented by festive celebrations. In the evening, the square comes alive with live music, a brass band, and entertainment, while families gather for community dinners to share traditional dishes. Canistro's cuisine tells the story of its territory: from forest products to the famous Roscetta chestnut of the Valle Roveto, the village's gastronomic pride, along with the Abruzzese specialties that accompany every village festival.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Abruzzo. Canistro is famous for its high-quality spring waters: the nearby area of Canistro Terme is fed by the Santa Croce spring, one of the most renowned in the region. Surrounding the village are chestnut forests and nature trails that make this stretch of the Valle Roveto an ideal destination for those seeking peace, wellness, and contact with nature.
The Patronal Feast of San Giovanni Decollato is promoted by the Parish and the Municipality of Canistro, with the support of the local Pro Loco, and remains one of the events that best expresses the community spirit of the small villages in the Abruzzo hinterland.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of San Giovanni Decollato will be held in Canistro (AQ) on August 29, 2026, the fixed liturgical date of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The heart of the celebration remains the solemn mass and the procession with the statue of the patron saint along the village streets, followed by civil celebrations in the square.
The complete program, including the times of religious services and musical and social events, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the festival. It is recommended to follow the channels of the Municipality of Canistro and the Pro Loco for updates.
