Pietragalla honours its patron saint with a torchlight procession, a solemn procession, and fireworks
May 10th is the most anticipated day of the year for Pietragalla, a village in the province of Potenza: it is the solemnity of Saint Theodosius the Martyr, the patron saint and protector of the town, venerated with a devotion that inextricably links the Pietragalla community, both in Italy and among emigrants as far as Argentina.
The main part of the festival begins on the evening of May 9th with the evocative vigil procession: a characteristic torchlight procession winds through the streets of the village and accompanies the statue of Saint Theodosius, known as "zicc" (the little one), to Piazza Principe Umberto I, amidst lights and prayers.
The heart of the celebrations is experienced on the morning of May 10th: after the holy mass, the procession of the faithful, accompanied by the band "G. Pafundi โ Cittร di Pietragalla", participates in the solemn and grand procession, during which, in addition to the statue of the patron saint, those of all the other saints kept by the parish are carried, along a route that crosses the historic districts of the town.
The popular dimension of the festival culminates with the evening concert on May 11th, which draws crowds from all the neighbouring towns, and with the "explosive" finale of the fireworks display. Between faith, music, and tradition, the feast of Saint Theodosius remains the most identity-defining event in the Pietragalla calendar.
For 2026, the feast of Saint Theodosius the Martyr in Pietragalla is expected from May 9th to 11th, with the solemnity of the patron saint set for May 10th. As tradition dictates, it begins on the evening of the 9th with the vigil torchlight procession, continues on the 10th with the solemn procession, and concludes on the 11th with the evening concert and fireworks. The final program will be released by the parish and the municipality in the weeks prior.
