Ten days of novena, processions, and pyromusical displays in the village on the Volturno

In the town of Amorosi, a village of just over 2,600 inhabitants overlooking the Volturno River in the Province of Benevento (Campania), the Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most cherished event of the year. It is celebrated on September 29th, the liturgical day dedicated to the Archangel, and is preceded by ten days of spiritual preparation involving the entire community: a tradition unchanged over time that turns the last week of September into the busiest moment in the village calendar.
The heart of the festivities is the Parish Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, an 18th-century building overlooking Piazza Umberto I: this is where the procession begins and where the civil part of the festival is concentrated in the evening. The town schedules the celebrations to begin on the morning of September 29th, with free admission to all events.
Preparation for the festival follows a consolidated pattern repeated year after year by the Parish: every evening, the faithful gather for the recitation of the Angelic Crown, the novena, and Holy Mass. The pace intensifies on the weekend preceding the feast, when the brass band, festive illuminations, and pilgrims from the nearby Valle Telesina join the devotional activities.
Alongside the liturgical calendar, the festival committee organizes a civil program in Piazza Umberto I: evening concerts featuring pop and dance music, tribute bands dedicated to the great names of Italian music, ballroom orchestras, and the accompaniment of the brass band during Sunday morning services. The grand finale is the pyromusical show, which in recent years has been held late in the evening along Via XXV Aprile, where the open space allows the public to gather safely.
Devotion to Saint Michael is deeply rooted throughout Southern Italy, where it spread during the Lombard era starting from the great sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo: the warrior Archangel, depicted with a sword and scales, became the protector of dozens of Apennine communities. Amorosi is no exception: the town was likely founded in the late Middle Ages, and its name is traced back to an ancient Lombard nobleman named Amoroso. To understand today's festival, one must keep this background in mind: it is not a manufactured tourist event, but a community liturgy passed down from generation to generation.
Amorosi stands at an altitude of about 60 meters in an agricultural area dedicated to cereals, located within the Sannio DOC wine region, home to Falanghina and Aglianico del Taburno. Among the local specialties, the panorra stands out—a humble dish made of stale bread, beans, and turnip greens, recognized as a traditional product. In the historic center, Palazzo Maturi is worth a visit; it houses the municipal offices and collections related to Italian history between the 19th and 20th centuries. Those visiting the village in summer can combine the patronal feast with other local events, such as the corn festival held at the end of August.
The date is fixed and falls as always on September 29th, but as of today, neither the Parish nor the Municipality of Amorosi has released the official 2026 festival program. Mass times, the duration of the novena, the names of the artists expected in Piazza Umberto I, and confirmation of the pyromusical show will be announced in the weeks leading up to the festival: it is therefore advisable to check the Parish and Municipality channels before planning your trip.
The patronal feast of Amorosi is tied to a fixed date in the liturgical calendar, September 29th, and in recent years it has spanned about ten days of evening celebrations. For 2026, however, no program has been released yet: we do not have times, artist names, or confirmation of the final pyromusical show.
As soon as the 2026 program is made public, this page will be updated with confirmed dates, times, and events.
By car: Amorosi can be reached via the SS 372 Telesina, the highway connecting Caianello and Benevento through the Valle Telesina; from Naples and Caserta, take the A1 and then the Telesina. By train: the most convenient station is Telese-Cerreto, on the Caserta-Benevento line, a few kilometers from the village. By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport is about an hour and a half away by car.
The religious services are held in the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Piazza Umberto I, which also hosts the evening concerts; the final pyromusical show has been held in recent years on Via XXV Aprile.
Free admission to all religious and civil events. The historic center is small: it is best to arrive early and park in the outer areas, as several streets are closed to traffic during the festival evenings and the procession.
