Teverola celebrates its patron saint, the beloved disciple, with solemn rites and popular festivities

In Teverola, a town of just over ten thousand inhabitants nestled in the Aversa countryside, in the province of Caserta and the heart of Campania, devotion to Saint John the Evangelist is not just a detail on the liturgical calendar: it is a defining trait of local identity. The parish church is named after him, and the festival posters have always presented him with the title that the people of Teverola have repeated for generations: the beloved disciple, the apostle to whom tradition attributes the fourth Gospel and the Book of Revelation.
The liturgical date falls on December 27th, in the heart of the Christmas season. It is the moment when the community gathers in the church for the solemn Eucharistic celebration and the procession of the statue along the town streets, accompanied by confraternities, civil authorities, and the faithful. The atmosphere is unique: the patronal feast blends with the lights and nativity scenes of Christmas, and the town experiences two celebrations in one, with families heading out on the winter afternoon to follow the saint.
Alongside the religious rites, the program for the 2025 edition included the typical civil aspects of the festival: live music and folk performances, food stalls featuring traditional Campanian dishes, Christmas craft markets, games and entertainment for children, and an evening fireworks display.
Those familiar with Teverola know that, beyond the December recurrence, the town has also dedicated major public festivities to its patron saint during the milder season, documented with very rich programs. In 2017, celebrations ran from September 7th to 12th; in 2018, the calendar spanned from September 16th to 30th, with the core events between the 22nd and 25th. Those editions featured dawn bell-ringing and cannon fire, the triduum and novena of prayer, the descent and enthronement of the statue, processions through the various districts of the townโfrom the Rione Pecorario to the visit to the cemetery for a memorial mass for the deceasedโand the lighting of the illuminations.
One aspect that the organizers have always proudly claimed: the festivities are funded entirely by the people of Teverola. Door-to-door collections, donations from merchants, and the voluntary work of the committee and the parish pastoral council support the illuminations, bands, and fireworks. It is a typically Southern Italian festival economy, where the success of the procession is a matter of collective honor rather than just a budget.
At the moment, the program for the 2026 festivities has not yet been published online: this is completely normal, as the festival poster is released by the parish and the committee only a few weeks before the event. Those wishing to attend should follow the channels of the Saint John the Evangelist Parish and the local press of the Aversa area, where programs are promptly reported.
Teverola is located just a few kilometers from Aversa, a Norman city of art, and a short distance from the Royal Palace of Caserta and Santa Maria Capua Vetere: participating in the patronal feast can therefore become an opportunity for a day in the Caserta hinterland, among historic churches, buffalo mozzarella, and the popular cuisine that finds its most authentic showcase in the festival stalls.
As of the writing of this sheet, neither the dates nor the program for the 2026 festivities in honor of Saint John the Evangelist in Teverola, in the province of Caserta, have been published online. There is nothing unusual about this: the parish and the committee release the poster and flyers only a few weeks before the recurrence, which tradition links to December 27th.
In the absence of official announcements, we do not anticipate times, guests, or appointments. Those who wish to plan ahead can follow the channels of the Saint John the Evangelist Parish and the local press of the Aversa area, which every year covers the complete program as soon as it is made public.
The rites are held in the parish church of Saint John the Evangelist in Teverola (CE); processions, illuminations, and shows take place in the town center and Piazza Cavour.
By car: Teverola is served by the road network of the Aversa area and is easily reachable from Aversa and the Caserta Sud motorway exit on the A1. By train: the most convenient station is Aversa, a few kilometers away, connected to Naples and the Caserta area; from there, you can continue by bus or taxi.
