Two days of faith and community in Puglianello, in the Sannio area of Benevento
The Patronal Feast of Saint James the Apostle is the most anticipated event of the year in Puglianello, a small town of just over 1,200 inhabitants in the province of Benevento, Campania. Every year, around July 25th — the liturgical day of the Apostle James — the town pauses its daily routine and gathers for a short but intense program, spanning two days that alternate religious celebrations, civic moments, and an evening concert in the square open to everyone.
This is not a manufactured tourist event: it is a true village festival, the kind that brings home those who have emigrated and those living elsewhere. Mayor Francesco Maria Rubano described it as "two days of faith and community," two important days "to reunite, strengthen the sense of belonging to the community, and renew a deeply felt tradition."
The bond between Puglianello and its patron saint is centered on the parish church of Saint James the Apostle, documented as early as the 14th century under the title of Santa Maria Assunta. The building was reconstructed after the violent earthquake of 1688 and later completely rebuilt in modern style in 1966. Inside, it houses the venerated image of Saint James, which was once kept in a chapel that later collapsed: a detail that speaks volumes about the continuity of a devotion that has never been interrupted, surviving earthquakes and reconstructions. The patronal feast remains fixed on July 25th, as per the tradition of the Universal Church.
The structure of the festival is as essential as it is recognizable. The first day opens in the late afternoon with a civic moment, continues with the procession to the municipal cemetery — a gesture of collective memory for the town's deceased — and culminates in the Holy Mass, accompanied by the voices of the "Nicola Sala" Conservatory Choir of Benevento.
The evening concludes with a dinner offered by the municipal administration to the citizens in Piazza Perlingieri: long outdoor tables, a shared meal, and the conviviality that is an integral part of the festive ritual in this part of Campania. On the day of the patron saint, July 25th, the solemn morning Mass is followed by the laying of a wreath in Piazza 21 Aprile 1948. In the evening, the focus shifts to Piazza Gabriele Pastore, the natural stage of the festival, where the concert that closes the celebrations takes place.
For several editions, Puglianello has chosen to entrust the closing of the patronal feast to a well-known name in Italian music, with free-access concerts in the square: in 2025, Ivana Spagna took the stage in Piazza Gabriele Pastore, while in 2026, Fausto Leali, one of the most recognizable voices in Italian pop music, arrived. It is a formula that allows a small town to offer a high-quality evening to an audience that also arrives from the neighboring towns of the Valle Telesina.
Puglianello lies at about 61 meters above sea level, on a plain a stone's throw from the Volturno River, and borders Amorosi, Faicchio, San Salvatore Telesino, and Ruviano (the latter already in the province of Caserta). We are in the Sannio area of Benevento, in the Valle Telesina, known for its winemaking tradition and orderly agricultural landscape. Those arriving for the festival can easily extend their visit to the nearby villages, among rural villas, wineries, and the thermal baths of Telese.
Those looking for an authentic patronal feast will find a very clear example in Puglianello: two days where the religious dimension is the heart of the event and where the evening concert acts as a meeting point for the entire community. Participation is free and outdoors, and the atmosphere is the familiar one of the small towns of Sannio. An ideal opportunity to understand how inland Campania still lives its traditions naturally, far from the most beaten tourist circuits.
In 2026, Puglianello celebrated its patron saint on Friday, July 24th, and Saturday, July 25th, with a program that was intentionally essential but dense with meaning for the community of this small town in the province of Benevento. Mayor Francesco Maria Rubano presented the edition as "two days of faith and community," two days "to reunite, strengthen the sense of belonging to the community, and renew a deeply felt tradition."
The first evening combined an institutional moment — the inauguration of the new "Elena Sica" Nursery School — with the devotional heart of the festival, with the procession to the municipal cemetery and the Holy Mass accompanied by the voices of the "Nicola Sala" Conservatory Choir of Benevento. Following this, the dinner offered by the municipal administration to the citizens in Piazza Perlingieri brought the town together outdoors.
The patron saint's day opened with the 11:00 AM Holy Mass and the laying of a wreath in Piazza 21 Aprile 1948, while at 10:00 PM, Piazza Gabriele Pastore hosted the concert by Fausto Leali, invited to close the festivities in front of an audience that also arrived from the neighboring towns of the Valle Telesina.
By car: Puglianello is served by the SS 372 "Telesina", the road that connects Benevento to the A1 Milan-Naples motorway in the Caianello area; take the Castelvenere/Puglianello exit. The town is easily reached from Benevento, Caserta, and the Telese Terme area.
The events are concentrated in the town center: the parish church of Saint James the Apostle for celebrations, Piazza Perlingieri for the community dinner, Piazza 21 Aprile 1948 for the wreath-laying, and Piazza Gabriele Pastore for the evening concert.
Free-access public event: the dinner on July 24th is offered by the municipal administration to the citizens, and the final concert is held in the square (in 2025 with free admission).
The concert starts at 10:00 PM: it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot in the square and parking in the surrounding streets. In mid-July, the evenings remain mild, but a light sweater is useful. For accommodation, you can look at Telese Terme and the towns of the Valle Telesina, which are better served by hotels and farmhouses.
