Broni celebrates its patron saint with faith, gastronomy, and entertainment
The Patronal Feast of Saint Contard is the most cherished event of the year for Broni, a town in the Oltrepò Pavese in the Province of Pavia. The festival celebrates Saint Contard d'Este, a 12th-century Este prince who died in Broni during a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and later became the town's patron saint.
For several days, the center of Broni, particularly Piazza Vittorio Veneto, comes alive with the attractions of the funfair and food stalls offering street food and local specialties, including the renowned Ravioleria San Giorgio. The feast blends devotional tradition with the convivial atmosphere typical of Italian patronal feasts, attracting families and visitors from all over the Oltrepò region.
The celebrations conclude with an evening at the Carbonetti Theatre, hosting a musical performance accompanied by the ceremony for the awarding of civic merits. This is when the town comes together to celebrate its patron saint and honor those who have distinguished themselves in the community's life.
The Feast of Saint Contard tells the story of Broni and the Oltrepò Pavese, a land of wines and traditions. Between faith, gastronomy, and entertainment, the event is an opportunity to discover a town that cherishes the memory of a pilgrim saint and renews its bond with its roots every year.
