The patronal feast of Castagnetta, in Ardea, in honor of Saint Catherine of Siena
In Ardea, a city in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital in Lazio, the Castagnetta district celebrates its most cherished event every year on April 29th: the Patronal Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena. It is the gathering that unites the entire parish community around its patron saint, in a day marked by prayer, blessings, and encounters among the neighborhood families.
The April 29th recurrence coincides with the liturgical memorial of Saint Catherine of Siena, a mystic and Doctor of the Church, proclaimed patron of Italy and co-patron of Europe. Her figure—a woman of faith, words, and great spiritual strength—gives its name to the Castagnetta parish and guides its community life. For the residents of the district, the feast is not just a religious moment, but also an opportunity to meet and renew their sense of belonging to the place where they live.
The parish of Saint Catherine of Siena, part of the Vicariate of Pomezia in the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano, is a relatively young reality that has grown alongside the Castagnetta district. The patronal feast perfectly reflects its spirit: liturgies animated by the parish choir, altar servers, and the community's youth, with participation involving both young and old. Around the Holy Mass revolve the gestures that mark the life of the parish, from the First Communions of the children to the blessings addressed to families and those who work in the area.
The Eucharistic celebration is the heart of the day. Around it, moments particularly dear to the community are intertwined: the blessing of the children preparing for their First Communion, the blessing of local merchants and workers, and the presentation of the parish's participatory bodies. The feast thus becomes the moment when the community tells its story, gives thanks, and looks ahead, rediscovering the value of the bonds that keep it united.
Despite its intimate dimension, the Feast of Saint Catherine is a key piece in the calendar of patronal feasts of the Municipality of Ardea and the coast south of Rome. An authentic opportunity to get to know the life of a district and its identity up close, far from large events but rich in meaning for those who live it.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena took place on April 29th at the parish of Castagnetta, in Ardea. The day united the community around the Eucharistic celebration and a series of significant gestures for parish life, from the blessing of a bell to moments dedicated to the neighborhood's children and families.
Before the Eucharistic celebration, the community experienced the blessing of a bell, restored and placed in the sacristy, intended to announce the beginning of liturgical celebrations. The Holy Mass was presided over by Father Paolo Larin and concelebrated by the parish priest Father Pietro, animated by the parish choir, the group of altar servers, and the community's youth.
At the end of the celebration, blessed crosses were handed out to the children who will receive their First Communion; this was followed by the blessing of the local merchants and workers of the parish territory and the official presentation of the members of the Parish Pastoral Council and the Economic Affairs Council. Representatives of the Ardea municipal administration also took part in the feast.
