A historical re-enactment at the court of Bianca of Navarre, on the Historic Hill of Paternò
The Paternò Medieval Festival is the most significant historical re-enactment in the town of Paternò, in the province of Catania (Sicily). Every spring, the Historic Hill, overlooked by the imposing Norman Castle built in 1072 by Roger I of Sicily, turns into an authentic medieval village populated by ladies, knights, musicians, poets, and traditional craftsmen. For a few days, the city rediscovers its roots and celebrates history, music, and traditions in an atmosphere suspended in time.
The central theme of the event is the court of Bianca of Navarre, Queen of Sicily, a figure closely linked to the history of the Paternò castle. The re-enacted scenes revolve around this courtly imagery: the arrival of the Queen and her entourage, official ceremonies, and the daily life of the village, reconstructed with philological care in period costumes and objects.
The festival days offer a rich calendar of events that bring the streets of the historic center and the esplanade of the Norman Castle to life:
Associated with the Medieval Festival is the Paternò City Palio, a competition involving local schools and neighborhoods that strengthens the event's bond with the local community. The event is organized by the Associazione Culturale Coro Polifonico Sturm und Drang with its Chamber Orchestra, in collaboration with local schools and associations.
Between re-enactments, shows, and medieval taverns, the Paternò Medieval Festival is an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating historic centers in the Etna area and to experience a journey through time suitable for both adults and children, immersed in the unique landscape of inland Sicily, amidst citrus groves with the silhouette of Mount Etna in the background.
The 9th edition of the Paternò Medieval Festival was held on May 22, 2026, confirming the spring appointment with the most heartfelt historical re-enactment of the Etna city. The historic center and the esplanade of the Norman Castle hosted the historical pageant, the knighting ceremony, period dances, and performances by flag-wavers, drummers, falconers, and jugglers.
The 2026 edition was accompanied by the 12th Paternò City Palio, involving local schools, including the "G. Marconi" Comprehensive Institute. The organization is managed by the Associazione Culturale Coro Polifonico Sturm und Drang.
