A Good Friday tradition in the heart of the village

The Passion of Christ is the most poignant event of Holy Week in Monte San Biagio, a village in the province of Latina overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta in southern Lazio. On the evening of Good Friday, Piazzale Saint Romain Le Puy—named after the French town twinned with the municipality—transforms into an open-air theatre where the Passion is reenacted as told in the Gospels.

This is no ordinary show; it is a civic and religious rite that defines the community. Local residents participate as actors, spectators, and volunteers, while the square fills with families, worshippers, and visitors arriving from nearby towns, from Fondi to Terracina and Gaeta.

The sacred performance

The staging retraces the final hours of Jesus' life: his entry, the trial before Pontius Pilate, the condemnation, the ascent to Calvary, and the crucifixion. The scenography and direction are entrusted to the Giulio Cesare Association, a local group specializing in historical reenactments and performances, which has recently brought Monte San Biagio’s traditions beyond municipal borders, even reaching the Roman stages of the Circus Maximus.

The tone is one of sobriety: minimalist lighting, period costumes, texts drawn from the Gospel narrative, and a measured use of music that accompanies the most dramatic moments without ever overpowering them. The result is a performance that balances spiritual depth with theatrical spectacle, restoring the original meaning of sacred folk theatre.

The Festival of Emotions

Starting in 2026, the Passion of Christ is included in the Festival of Emotions, Monte San Biagio’s cultural program funded by the Lazio Region through the "Live Performances" public notice, with the support of the Municipality of Monte San Biagio and the Pro Loco Monte San Biagio APS. The same program includes dance performances, film festivals, and concerts throughout the year that bring the village squares to life from spring to late summer.

As Councillor for Culture Anna Maria Ferreri noted, continuing this sacred performance is the right way to keep traditions alive: a moment where art becomes a tool for collective reflection and an occasion for the entire community to come together.
