The Valle Caudina village comes alive with Roman thermopolia and the Nativity
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Paolisi Living Nativity is not a static display to be viewed from afar, but a journey to be experienced. The small town in the Valle Caudina, in the Province of Benevento, opens its alleys, courtyards, and squares for an expansive performance stretching over three hundred meters. Actors, extras, and period artisans work within the scenes, and visitors are not mere passive observers: the organizers have designed the event to encourage active participation and interaction along the route.
The unique feature of the Paolisi performance is the bridge it builds between two worlds. The journey begins with scenes of contemporary life, then slips back in time to the thermopolia, the shops where Romans consumed ready-to-eat food: this is the origin of the event's signature claim, referencing the first street food of the early Christian world, with recipes blending ancient culinary traditions with modern tastes. After passing through scenes of daily Roman life, the path leads to the Nativity, presented in the style of an 18th-century Neapolitan crèche, complete with animated scenes and dialogue.
The conclusion is the most theatrical moment of the evening: a Tableau Vivant staged in Piazza Padre Pio, the town's civic heart, where the performers compose a motionless living picture before the audience. Along the way, there is no shortage of tabernae, period taverns where one can sample dishes inspired by ancient dietary habits—a choice that ties together spectacle, craftsmanship, and gastronomy, three elements that always go hand in hand in the festivals and re-enactments of inland Campania.
Behind the initiative is the Associazione Culturale Jesce 'o sole, a theatre company founded in Paolisi in the early 2000s and established as a cultural association in 2003, recognized within the Campanian amateur theatre circuit. It is from their stage experience that the highly theatrical nature of the nativity scene is derived: direction, scripts, dialogue-based scenes, and attention to costumes. The organization is carried out in collaboration with other local associations and with the support of the Municipality of Paolisi, which includes the event in the town's official calendar.
Paolisi has just over two thousand inhabitants and is located in the Valle Caudina, the basin connecting the Sannio area of Benevento with the plains of Naples, in Campania. It is a territory of historical passage, nestled between the Taburno and the Partenio mountains, where towns have preserved a dense network of patronal feasts, food festivals, and Christmas representations. During the holiday season, the valley offers several living nativity scenes within a few kilometers of each other, and the Paolisi event stands out for its choice to narrate the material life of the Roman era before reaching the Nativity.
Official municipal communications place the performance on the evenings of December 28 and 29, with the route opening at 5:00 PM. The visit is organized in shifts, with advance booking required: in documented editions, two groups were scheduled per evening, one in the early afternoon and one after dinner, and visitors were advised to be punctual so as not to miss the guided tour.
As this is an event managed by volunteers, dates, times, and booking methods are communicated a few weeks before Christmas each year through the channels of the Associazione Culturale Jesce 'o sole and the events section of the Paolisi municipal website. It is therefore advisable to verify the confirmation of the edition before planning your trip.
For December 2026, no official announcements regarding the dates and program of the Paolisi Living Nativity have been released yet. The performance is organized by the Associazione Culturale Jesce 'o sole with the support of the Municipality of Paolisi, in the Province of Benevento, and information is typically released a few weeks before the Christmas holidays.
The established formula includes a route of over three hundred meters in the village, animated by actors, extras, and period artisans, with the taverns and thermopolia of the ancient Romans, the Nativity scenes in the style of the 18th-century Neapolitan crèche, and the concluding Tableau Vivant in Piazza Padre Pio. Access is organized in shifts, with booking recommended and punctuality advised.
Confirmations should be sought on the page of the Associazione Culturale Jesce 'o sole and in the events and manifestations section of the Municipality of Paolisi's website. This sheet will be updated as soon as the 2026 dates are made public.
