About Panevin

On the evening of January 5th, Vittorio Veneto is illuminated by the Panevin, the large Epiphany bonfires that burn in several areas of the city to burn the old year and usher in the new. Amidst pinza, mulled wine, and the anticipation of Befana, it is a millennia-old Venetian rite that unites the communities of Nove, San Floriano, and other districts of Vittorio Veneto around the fire.

The Venetian fire ritual

The Panevin is the ancient Epiphany bonfire typical of the Veneto region, lit on the evening of January 5th or 6th to "burn the old year" and wish prosperity. In Vittorio Veneto, in the province of Treviso, the tradition is renewed in several parts of the city: several authorized Panevin burn on the same evening, each animated by neighborhood associations and communities.

Pinza, mulled wine, and Befana

Around the fire, traditional gestures are renewed: the pinza (the peasant dessert of the holidays), mulled wine, and, for the little ones, the anticipation of Befana. The direction of the sparks and smoke from the Panevin is observed, according to custom, to draw omens about the agricultural year.

A widespread event

In Vittorio Veneto, a children's Panevin in the Rossi Area and the traditional Panevin in Prati di Nove coexist, along with other neighborhood bonfires. It is one of the most cherished winter festivals in Vittorio Veneto, capable of gathering families and communities in the cold Epiphany evening around a large propitiatory fire.
