The Epiphany bonfire in Padernello di Paese
The Pan&Vin (or panevin) is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Veneto and particularly in the Marca Trevigiana: on the eve of Epiphany, a large bonfire is lit, around which the entire community gathers. In Padernello, a hamlet of the Municipality of Paese (TV), the ritual is managed by the volunteers of the Gruppo San Gottardo.
According to peasant tradition, the direction of the sparks — the faìve — that the bonfire sends towards the sky is used to predict the course of the agricultural year that is beginning. Around the fire, there is no shortage of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and typical Epiphany sweets, in a convivial atmosphere that warms the cold January evening.
More than a festival, Pan&Vin is an identity moment for the town: an opportunity to gather outdoors, bid farewell to Befana, and welcome the new year together. The same ritual is repeated on the same evening, or in the following days, in dozens of hamlets and municipalities in the Treviso area.
For 2026, the Gruppo San Gottardo will again light the Pan&Vin bonfire in Padernello di Paese on the evening of January 5th, Epiphany Eve, starting at 8:00 PM. Around the fire, the community will gather for the propitiatory ritual of the Marca Trevigiana, accompanied by mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.
