The medieval re-enactment of the Vallesina countryside in the historic center of Jesi
The Palio di San Floriano is the grand historical re-enactment that every spring transforms the historic center of Jesi, in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region, into a charming medieval village. For several days, around May 4th, the patron saint's feast day, the walls, squares, and alleys of the birthplace of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia come alive with costumed figures, drummers, flag-wavers, ladies, and knights, in an atmosphere that blends history, spectacle, and popular celebration.
The event has its roots in the 13th century. The pallium was the precious fabric that the feudal lords and castles of the Vallesina were obliged to deliver annually to the church of San Floriano, confirming their vassalage to the mother city of Aesis. The ceremony, documented as early as 1194 and later in 1227, marked the recognition of Jesi's leadership over the surrounding territory. Suspended in 1808, the tradition was revived in its modern form in 1996 and has been renewed annually with great participation ever since.
The heart of the festival is the grand historical parade, which crosses the city center with dozens of delegations and re-enactment groups from all over the Marche region. Alongside the parades, medieval taverns open, run by volunteers, where you can taste dishes inspired by the cuisine of the time: every year a jury awards the prize for the best typical medieval dish. There are also historical archery tournaments, competitions between districts, itinerant shows, craft markets, and events for children.
The Palio di San Floriano is a widespread festival that involves the entire community of Jesi and the municipalities of the Vallesina. Initiatives include themed dinners, historical treasure hunts, concerts, and entertainment. The mascots Leo and Flò – the lion cub with a crown, symbol of Jesi, and the child Saint Florian in Roman attire – accompany adults and children in discovering the medieval traditions of the area.
Experiencing the Palio di San Floriano means immersing yourself in the history of the Vallesina and discovering one of the most fascinating historic centers in the Marche region, declared a jewel of art and culture. Amidst the aroma of the taverns, the roll of the drums, and the colors of the flags, Jesi offers visitors an authentic and engaging experience, ideal for those who love historical re-enactments, traditional food and wine, and the unique atmosphere of the Marche villages.
The 29th edition of the Palio di San Floriano, titled 'Voices from the Village', was held in Jesi from May 2nd to 10th, 2026. The pre-Palio days (May 2-4) featured a mystery tour starting from Piazza Federico II, a dinner with a mystery, a scavenger hunt for children, and the traditional 'Scampanada de San Fiorà' dedicated to children.
The main event (May 7-10) saw the opening of five taverns in the historic center, historical parades with thirteen medieval delegations from all over the Marche region, the investiture of knights, competitions between groups, the grand parade with the mayors of the Vallesina, and on the final Sunday, the historical archery tournament and awards ceremony. Among the new features was the debut of the mascots Leo and Flò.
By car: A14 motorway, exit Ancona Nord, then take the SS76 dual carriageway towards Jesi. By train: Jesi station on the Rome-Ancona line, a few minutes from the historic center. Nearest airport: Ancona-Falconara (AOI), about 25 km away.
Access to parades, shows, and events in the streets of the center is free. Medieval taverns charge for consumption (à la carte). It is advisable to consult the official website for opening hours.
The historic center is largely pedestrianized during the event: it is best to park in areas outside the walls. Comfortable clothing is recommended for walks along the historical routes.
