The six hamlets compete for the Golden Ring in the medieval village of Valsassina
In Primaluna, a municipality in the province of Lecco nestled in Valsassina, the Palio delle Frazioni is the event of the year. Organized by the Gruppo Sbandieratori e Musici della Torre di Primaluna, the event transforms the historic center into a medieval village, with costumed figures, ancient crafts, and bygone-era atmospheres that provide the backdrop for the great competition between the hamlets.
The heart of the palio is the competition between the six hamlets of the town: Cortabbio, Primaluna, Pessina, Gero, Barcone, and Vimogno, each with its own color. For each hamlet, a knight and an archer compete for the prestigious Golden Ring, a symbol of victory. It is a competition that ignites local pride and involves entire communities of hamlets, with preparations, costumes, and cheering.
The program is full of spectacle: guided tours to discover the gates, doorways, and portals of the medieval village and the Tower of Primaluna, falconry exhibitions, performances by flag wavers and musicians, and fire shows by the Focoloco company. A succession of scenes culminates in the historical parade and the palio itself.
The Palio delle Frazioni is recognized among the historical re-enactments of the territory and represents a moment of identity for Primaluna and for the entire Valsassina, in Lombardy. With free admission, it attracts visitors from all over the province of Lecco and beyond, offering an authentic glimpse of history, tradition, and community spirit.
The 2026 edition of the Palio delle Frazioni will bring the medieval atmosphere that characterizes the event back to Primaluna. Traditionally, the event takes place on the Saturday closest to the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29th), barring postponements due to bad weather.
As per tradition, the six hamlets — Cortabbio, Primaluna, Pessina, Gero, Barcone, and Vimogno — will field a knight and an archer in the race for the Golden Ring, with the village enlivened by flag wavers, musicians, falconers, and guided tours of the Tower. The date and detailed program will be announced by the Gruppo Sbandieratori e Musici della Torre in the weeks prior.
Based on recent editions, the Palio delle Frazioni is structured as follows:
