Four days of challenges, parades, games, and local flavors between the districts of Palomonte
The Palio delle Contrade in Palomonte, a municipality in the province of Salerno overlooking the Sele Valley in Campania, was born with a simple yet ambitious goal: to reconnect the town's districts, make them compete, and bring them together. Those arriving expecting the equestrian race of a Tuscan Palio will be surprised, and in a positive way: in Palomonte, you don't race on horses; you compete with your arms, your aim, your head, and your voice, district against district, for four days in July.
Over the years, the event has taken the form of a true popular re-enactment: a parade through the village streets, groups identified by symbols and colors, medieval-style games, and the final award ceremony that grants the banner to the winning district. Everything else—the music, the roving performers, the local cuisine—revolves around the competition, transforming the challenge into one of the most popular weeks of the Palomonte summer.
The trials that mark the days are designed to involve mixed teams rather than specialized athletes. The typical program includes:
Points are accumulated throughout the days: the qualifiers precede the finals, and only on the last evening does the official award ceremony take place, followed by the great district dinner that concludes the event with music and entertainment.
Every evening, the Palio offers a show that now has a reach well beyond the municipal borders. The 2026 edition, the eighth, opened on Friday, July 10th with the cabaret of Made in Sud—Gino Fastidio, Enzo & Sal, Alessandro Bolide, and Enzo Fischetti, hosted by Gigi and Ross—followed by a live set by Peppe Soks, a DJ set by Paolo Noise (Radio 105, Zoo 105), and the folk music of Vienteterra. Previous evenings featured tarantellas, fire shows, acrobatics by roving artists, DJ sets under the stars, and themed parties like the Color Wave Party.
From 8:00 PM each evening, the food stalls open, where you can taste the traditional peasant dishes of the Sele and Cilento area: homemade pasta, grilled meats, cheeses, and local products, accompanied by regional wines. This is the most convivial part of the festival, the one that brings different generations together and draws emigrants and families back to town for the summer.
With just under 3,800 inhabitants, perched at over 400 meters above sea level between the Sele Valley and the gateway to the Cilento, Palomonte preserves traces of the Lombard castle and a compact historic center that is perfect for the parade. The municipality, which was simply called Palo until 1862, is today composed of the hamlets of Bivio, Scorzo, Valle, Fontana, Pezzelle, and Sottana-Pantaglione: this scattered geography explains why a district Palio has such a strong meaning here—it is the way the town tells its story and reconnects once a year.
The Palio delle Contrade is one of those events where you are never truly just a spectator: the districts involve everyone who passes by, admission is free, and the atmosphere remains that of a village festival—authentic and unfiltered. For those visiting inland Campania in July, it is the best opportunity to see Palomonte in its most vibrant version, just a few kilometers from the highway exit and less than an hour from Salerno.
From July 10 to 13, 2026, Palomonte, in the Sele Valley in the province of Salerno, hosted the eighth edition of the Palio delle Contrade. Four days built around challenges between the town's districts — tug-of-war, skill trials, precision games, and cultural moments — with the district parade marking the bond with the village's traditions.
The opening on Friday, July 10th was entrusted to the Made in Sud cabaret, with Gino Fastidio, Enzo & Sal, Alessandro Bolide, and Enzo Fischetti, hosted by Gigi and Ross. On Saturday the 11th, Peppe Soks took the stage; Sunday the 12th featured a DJ set by Paolo Noise (Radio 105, Zoo 105); and Monday the 13th concluded with Vienteterra and their folk music.
Every evening from 8:00 PM, food stalls offered local cuisine while roving performers animated the streets of the center. Admission remained free for all evenings, confirming the popular and family-friendly nature of the event, one of the most attended in the summer of inland Campania.
The district competitions (tug-of-war, skill trials, precision games, and cultural trials) took place during the days, along with the parade of groups with symbols and colors.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exit at Sicignano degli Alburni or the Palomonte junction along the Sicignano-Potenza highway, then follow signs for the center. From Salerno, it is about 60 km. By train: Sicignano degli Alburni or Contursi Terme station, then bus or taxi. Nearest airport: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
Free admission to all evenings. Food stalls and roving performances open from 8:00 PM; concerts and evening shows start between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM. District competitions take place in the late afternoon.
The village is hilly and partly paved: comfortable shoes are recommended. Parking is available in areas on the outskirts of the center, but it is advisable to arrive early on nights with major guests. For accommodation, there are farmhouses and B&Bs in the Sele Valley, in Contursi Terme, and in the Alburni area.
