About Palio del Tributo
A six-week re-enactment
The Palio del Tributo is the signature event of Priverno, a town in the province of Latina, nestled at the foot of the Lepini Mountains in southern Lazio. Established in 1993, the re-enactment is not just a single-evening affair; it unfolds over more than a month, from the unveiling of the banner in late May to the grand finale on the first Sunday of July. This unusual duration is what makes it a truly immersive experience, involving the entire town, including schools and local associations.
The historical event
The festival brings to life the final decades of the 16th century, when the castles of Roccagorga, Maenza, Prossedi, and Sonnino were required to pay tribute to Priverno, the dominant city of the territory. The central moment of the re-enactment is the payment of the tribute, preceded by the ritual offering of wine and accompanied by the narration of the event's origins. The procession features key figures from Priverno's Renaissance history: Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, the Podestà, centurions, officers and men-at-arms from the four gates, as well as knights and noblewomen from local families.
The four Gates and the Ring Joust
The competitive heart of the event is the Ring Joust, contested on horseback using military lances without iron tips. The four ancient districts, corresponding to the gates of the town walls, compete against each other:
- Porta Campanina
- Porta Posterula
- Porta Romana
- Porta Paolina
Each district fields two knights to compete for the banner, a work of art commissioned from a different artist each year and unveiled at the opening ceremony. The race is overseen by a Field Master and takes place before a crowd that fills the square by early afternoon.
The Gate Festivals
In the weeks leading up to the Palio, each district organizes its own Gate Festival in a different corner of the historic center: Largo Paolina, Piazza Trieste, Piazzale Metabo, and Piazzetta della Stella. These evenings are filled with folk music, colorful flags, costumed processions, and, above all, tastings of typical Lepini products, turning the narrow alleys into one long communal table. This is where you can experience the most authentic and convivial side of the event.
The night of the torchlight procession
The Saturday before the Palio is dedicated to the nighttime historical pageant with a torchlight procession: the medieval alleys and squares are illuminated only by torches as costumed figures, flag-throwers, fire jugglers, and Renaissance dance groups parade through the town. This is followed by the blessing of the participants, the performance of the Palio Anthem, and the drawing of the starting order for the horses. It is the most evocative moment of the entire festival and is best experienced on foot, without rushing.
Priverno beyond the Palio
Visitors arriving for the Palio will find a town that deserves more than a single day. A few kilometers away, you can visit the Fossanova Abbey, the first example of Gothic-Cistercian architecture in Italy, and the archaeological site of ancient Privernum with its Archaeological Museum. The Lepini Mountains area also offers excellent extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, and the famous falia with puntarella, a Priverno specialty easily found during the district festivals.
Why it's worth the trip
The Palio del Tributo is not a postcard-perfect reconstruction; the costumes, roles, and rules of the race are managed by the locals, and the community's involvement is palpable. For those visiting Lazio in the summer, it is one of the best opportunities to see a deeply rooted historical re-enactment, far from the major tourist circuits.

30th edition: thirty years of the Palio
The 2026 edition celebrated the thirty-year milestone with a program spread over six weeks, built around the project The Palio del Tributo – 30 years, which involved schools and local associations of Priverno.
Opening
On Saturday, May 23, the inaugural ceremony unveiled the banner signed by artist Tiziana Pietrobono, with the assignment of knights to the four gates and the opening of the creative exhibition.

The grand finale
On Saturday, July 4, the nighttime historical pageant with a torchlight procession wound through the alleys of the center, followed by the blessing of the participants, the Palio Anthem performed by mezzo-soprano Stefania Antonetti, fire artists and flag-throwers, Renaissance dances by the Carola Privernensis, and the drawing of the starting order for the horses. On Sunday, July 5, in Piazza del Comune, the final historical pageant with Lazio delegations, the narration of the origins, the ritual offering of wine, and the payment of the tribute preceded the Ring Joust, directed by Field Master Luigi Cellini.

How to get there
By car: from Rome, take the Pontina (SS148) to Latina, then the SS156 of the Lepini Mountains towards Priverno; from the A1 motorway, take the Frosinone exit and follow the SS156. By train: Priverno-Fossanova station on the Rome-Naples line via Formia, connected to the town center by bus (about 8 km). Nearest airports: Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino.
Admission and seating
Evenings in the historic center and the processions are free to attend. For the Ring Joust, grandstand seating is available by reservation; information is available at the number provided by the organizers.
Tips
The historic center is hilly with stone paving: comfortable shoes are essential. Arrive well in advance on the Sunday of the Palio and park in the areas below the center. For accommodation, there are farmhouses and B&Bs in Priverno, Fossanova, and the nearby Lepini villages.
