About Palio del Mare

The Palio del Mare is the most anticipated event of the summer in Porto Sant'Elpidio, in the heart of the Faleriense district. Born in 1992, it sees the five maritime districts of the neighborhood - Balene (Whales), Squali (Sharks), Delfini (Dolphins), Sirene (Mermaids), and Cavallucci Marini (Seahorses) - compete in an evening of colors, music, and spectacle culminating in a 554-meter relay race. A parade of allegorical floats, choreographies, and stadium-level cheering transform the neighborhood's streets into a grand community celebration, while awaiting the district that will win the coveted Palio.

The Palio del Mare of Porto Sant'Elpidio

The Palio del Mare is one of the most heartfelt popular festivals on the Fermo Riviera and the symbolic event of the summer in Porto Sant'Elpidio, a city in the province of Fermo, in the Marche region. It takes place in the Faleriense district, the historic maritime district of the Adriatic town, and each year attracts thousands of people, including residents, vacationers, and curious onlookers.

A Tradition Born in 1992

The Palio was born in 1992 on the initiative of the local athletics association, now Atletica Porto Sant'Elpidio, with the aim of uniting sport, spectacle, and district identity. For over thirty years, the event has marked the beginning of the Elpidiense summer, renewing the friendly rivalry between the five districts that has been passed down through generations.

The Five Maritime Districts

The heart of the challenge lies with the five districts of the Faleriense neighborhood, each with its own colors, anthem, and supporters:

  • Le Balene (The Whales), the most decorated district in the hall of fame;
  • Gli Squali (The Sharks);
  • I Delfini (The Dolphins);
  • Le Sirene (The Mermaids);
  • I Cavallucci Marini (The Seahorses).

The Relay Race and Parade

The highlight is the 554-meter relay race that winds through the district's streets: each district fields a team composed of athletes of different ages - a child, a teenager, and an adult - in a race that offers thrilling comebacks and uncertain outcomes until the very last meter. Alongside the sporting competition is the parade of allegorical floats, with elaborate costumes, choreographies, and music that liven up the evening. The winning district earns the right to organize the spectacular summer carnival parade.

A Community Celebration

More than just a race, the Palio del Mare is a grand collective ritual that involves the entire district for weeks: from the preparation of the floats to the districts' "oath" traditionally held on the Wednesday evening before the race. It is an event that tells the maritime and popular soul of Porto Sant'Elpidio and the entire Marche Region.

Palio del Mare โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Palio del Mare is confirmed in the summer calendar of Porto Sant'Elpidio announced by the municipal administration. The event will take place, as tradition dictates, in July, in the Faleriense district, with the challenge between the five districts - Balene (Whales), Squali (Sharks), Delfini (Dolphins), Sirene (Mermaids), and Cavallucci Marini (Seahorses) - featuring a parade of allegorical floats, music, and the usual 554-meter relay race. The exact date and detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.

The Palio del Mare 2026 returns to Porto Sant'Elpidio to ignite the summer of the Faleriense district. The new edition, confirmed in the summer calendar announced by the Municipality, will bring back the historic challenge between the five maritime districts, vying for the title long dominated by the Balene (Whales), winners of the last edition.

As every year, the evening will combine the parade of allegorical floats, district choreographies, and the 554-meter relay race along the district's streets. The complete program, with the official date and times, will be released by Atletica Porto Sant'Elpidio and the districts' channels closer to the event.
