The Renaissance re-enactment and the Barrel Race in the village of Masolino
Castiglione Olona, in the province of Varese, is famous for being the "Tuscan island in Lombardy": a Renaissance village commissioned in the 15th century by Cardinal Branda Castiglioni, featuring the Collegiata church, the Baptistery frescoed by Masolino da Panicale, and Palazzo Branda Castiglioni. It is in this unique setting that the Palio dei Castelli comes to life every summer, a historical re-enactment that transports the town back to its period of greatest splendor.
The competition features the eight districts of the village — Centro Storico, Ciapa, Falcetta, Somadeo, Filisera, Madonna in Campagna, Gornate, and Careno — vying for the Pallium, the embroidered banner symbolizing victory. The heart of the competition is the renowned Barrel Race: district representatives push heavy barrels weighing over fifty kilograms along the steep and winding village streets, a test requiring strength, technique, and months of training.
The Palio is not just a race, but also a grand historical spectacle. The historical pageant features over 250 participants in Renaissance costumes, accompanied by flag-throwers. The first Sunday is dedicated to the investiture of the Captains and children's races; the second culminates with the Barrel Race in the natural amphitheater of the Castle of Monteruzzo, a picturesque setting overlooking the village.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Castiglione Olona, the Palio dei Castelli is more than a re-enactment: it is the moment when the entire community recognizes itself in its history and its districts, passing down the connection to the Renaissance past of the village, one of the most fascinating in the province of Varese, from generation to generation.
