About Notti dei Briganti

In the heart of the Cilento hinterland, Laurito transforms its historic center into an open-air theater for two nights. Notti dei Briganti recounts the post-unification brigandage that once swept through these mountains in the province of Salerno. Costumed actors, scenes of popular life, traditional music, and Cilento cuisine guide visitors through the village's alleys and squares. It is a re-enactment that weaves together historical memory, legend, and local identity, set against a nocturnal backdrop that is a spectacle in itself.

A re-enactment in the heart of Cilento

Notti dei Briganti takes place in Laurito, a small town in the province of Salerno, Campania, deep in the Cilento hinterland. For two summer evenings, the village's historic center becomes an open-air stage: alleys, stone stairways, ancient portals, and small squares serve as the natural backdrop for a collective narrative dedicated to post-unification brigandage, the era that profoundly shaped the communities of the Southern Apennines in the 19th century. This is more than just a village festival; it is a narrative journey that leads visitors through the village, stage by stage.

Brigandage told through the streets

The core of the event is the historical re-enactment. Through itinerant theatrical performances, scenes of popular life, and costumed actors, the exploits, struggles, and daily lives of the brigands who populated these lands in the 19th century are brought to life. The narrative alternates between historical documentation and oral legends passed down through generations: escapes into the woods, ambushes, and trials, alongside the ordinary lives of the farmers, women, and shepherds who were the silent protagonists of that era. The audience does not remain seated but moves from scene to scene, immersed in the darkness and the glow of torches.

Folk music and nocturnal atmosphere

The journey is accompanied by live folk music and traditional Southern songs, which mark the pauses between scenes. The nocturnal setting is an integral part of the experience: the soft lights of the village, the ancient stone houses, and the silence of the surrounding hills create a frame that no stage could replicate. It is one of those events where the village itself, rather than the set design, is the true star.

Cilento cuisine

As with every major event in the Cilento summer, gastronomy plays a leading role. Along the route, you will find stands and food stalls where you can taste traditional local dishes: homemade pasta, meatballs, local cured meats, typical desserts, and Cilento wine. It is an opportunity to discover a peasant cuisine made of simple ingredients, linked to the Mediterranean diet of which Cilento is the birthplace, and to understand how food here is as much a part of collective memory as the stories being told.

Crafts, trades, and material culture

Alongside the theater and the food, there are demonstrations of craftsmanship and traditional trades, with workshops and stations set up in the village streets. Agricultural tools, manual crafts, and everyday objects form a small, scattered museum that restores the material culture of the 19th-century Cilento, completing the historical picture staged by the actors.

An event for families

The event is designed for a wide audience. The scenes are accessible to children, with entertainment and activities dedicated to them, and the entire route is walkable within the historic center, in a compact and easily navigable space. For families vacationing on the Cilento coast, it is a great reason to head inland and discover a less touristy and more authentic side of the territory.

Laurito and its surroundings

Laurito is a village in inland Cilento, in the province of Salerno, far from the crowded beaches and surrounded by woods and hills. This very geography—rugged, wooded, and difficult to control—explains why these mountains were long a refuge for brigands. Visiting Laurito during Notti dei Briganti therefore means reading the landscape alongside its history: the territory is not just a background, but the very reason for the events being re-enacted.

When it takes place

The event traditionally takes place at the beginning of August: the 2025 edition was held on August 2nd and 3rd in the village's historic center. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced at the time of publication: it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of Laurito and local Cilento news outlets in the weeks leading up to the event. Do not confuse this with similar events held in other municipalities in Campania, particularly in San Gregorio Matese, in the province of Caserta.

Practical information — Notti dei Briganti

How to get there

Laurito is located in the Cilento hinterland, in the province of Salerno, and is easily reached by car via the provincial roads connecting the area's villages. Those arriving by train can refer to the stations on the Tyrrhenian line along the Cilento coast, then continue by car or local bus services towards the interior.

Parking and access

The event route is entirely pedestrianized within the historic center, where traffic is restricted during the evenings of the event: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the village and proceed on foot. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the path crosses stone alleys and stairways.

Tips

As this is an evening event in a hillside village, it can get chilly even in August: a light sweater is useful. For schedules, food stand prices, and any program changes, it is recommended to consult the official channels of the Municipality of Laurito and the local Cilento press before setting off.
