A white night in the heart of Formia

The Notti Bianche - Street Artists Festival is the event that, every summer, returns the city's most famous street to locals and visitors alike. Via Vitruvio, the long commercial axis that crosses the center of Formia, in the province of Latina, is closed to traffic and handed over to artists: for one evening, open shops, outdoor tables, and performances blend into a single promenade that lasts until late at night.

The formula is the classic Italian "white night," but adapted for street arts: not a single stage, but dozens of stations distributed along the route, where the public moves freely and chooses what to watch. It is an evening to be experienced by walking, between a juggling act and an acoustic concert, naturally involving families with children as well.

What to see on the street

The festival brings together the typical languages of the street artist, all designed to work without a curtain and without a ticket:

• Jugglers and circus artists, with clubs, hoops, stilts, and fire equipment;
• Mimes, living statues, and clowns who interact with passersby;
• Roaming musicians and small bands, from brass street bands to acoustic duos;
• Magicians and close-up magic artists, with up-close performances;
• Comedy shows and street theater in continuous rotation along the route;
• Entertainment and workshops for children in the side squares.

The audience is typical of August evenings on the Pontine coast: local families, vacationers from the Gulf of Gaeta, and groups of young people. The atmosphere is informal and the flow is continuous, so it is worth planning to see the same artists multiple times at different points along the street.

Part of the Formia Summer

The Notti Bianche is not an isolated event: it is part of the Estate Formiana (Formia Summer) program, the summer schedule that the Municipality of Formia distributes from July to September between the center, the villages, and the city's districts. In the 2026 edition, titled Timeless Beauty, the street artists' festival coexists with the Classical Theater Festival at the Caposele Archaeological Area, the Jazzflirt Festival, the Folklore Festival, and the many evenings at the Arena Vitruvio set up in Piazza Aldo Moro. Almost all events have free admission.

This choice to spread events across multiple locations responds to a precise idea of the city: to enhance the entire municipal territory and not just the waterfront, bringing the public into commercial streets and historic villages like Castellone and Mola.

Formia, between archaeology and the sea

Formia is one of the main centers of the Gulf of Gaeta, in southern Lazio. An ancient Roman city, it preserves the Tomb of Cicero along the Appian Way, Roman cisterns, the remains of Mamurra's villa in Caposele, and the hillside villages that overlook the sea. In summer, it becomes a convenient base for those visiting Gaeta, Sperlonga, Minturno, and the islands of Ponza and Ventotene, which are accessible from the port.

An evening like the Notti Bianche is therefore also a simple way to discover the city center: you arrive for the shows and end up taking a walk to the waterfront, with the lights of the gulf in the background.

• Arrive early: the street fills up quickly and city center parking lots run out by the early afternoon;
• Wear comfortable shoes, because the festival is explored on foot from one end to the other;
• Take advantage of the shops and businesses on Via Vitruvio, which stay open for special hours;
