The travelling Christmas celebration in the highest hamlet of Positano, perched above the Amalfi Coast
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
At an altitude of about 450 metres on the slopes of the Lattari Mountains, Nocelle is the highest and most secluded hamlet in the Municipality of Positano, in the Province of Salerno, Campania. With just a few dozen houses, a church dedicated to Santa Croce, narrow alleys, and stairways descending towards the sea, it offers a natural setting that, every December, becomes the stage for a living nativity quite different from the more monumental ones found in the inland villages of Campania. Here, there are no grand sets or massive crowds: just an entire village telling its own story.
The performance is not static but itinerant: the audience is guided along a path starting from the village square, winding through arches, steps, and terraces, encountering the scenes of the Nativity along the way. Each year, the organisers choose a different theme and interpretation, ensuring that returning visitors never see the same show twice. The residents act as actors, costume designers, and set decorators, with meticulous attention to detail being the hallmark of the initiative: subtle lighting, silence, the sound of the wind, and the twinkling lights of Positano below.
Behind the living nativity is the informal association of the «Giovani di Nocelle», which has been curating the hamlet's Christmas calendar for years. It is a voluntary, self-funded effort involving the village families with a clear goal: to keep a small, peripheral community alive in a municipality whose economy revolves almost entirely around summer beach tourism. Christmas is the time when Nocelle returns to being truly itself.
The living nativity is the most anticipated moment, but it is part of a programme that spans the entire holiday season. Recent editions have included:
Those who climb up to Nocelle for the nativity discover one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Coast. The hamlet is the terminus of the Path of the Gods, the famous hiking trail arriving from Bomerano (a hamlet of Agerola), running along the ridge with views of Capri and the Tyrrhenian Sea. In winter, the trail empties out and the village regains a slow pace, far removed from the summer crowds of Positano. Reaching it is part of the experience: you can climb from the centre via a staircase of about 1,500 steps or take the local shuttle bus.
This is a village festival, not a commercialised event. The audience is mostly made up of locals from the Coast, along with a few travellers visiting off-season. The tone is quiet and intimate, which is the real added value: a living nativity that doesn't perform for tourists but for itself, making it feel truly authentic. We recommend arriving a little early to wander through the village before the performance begins and staying afterwards, when the community gathers for a warm treat.
Christmas is the ideal season to visit the Amalfi Coast without the queues: Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, and Ravello are all nearby, and the Advent period brings illuminations, artistic nativity scenes, and church events. A day in Nocelle, with the climb on foot and the performance at sunset, is one of the most beautiful ways to understand how life really feels on this coast when the boats are docked.
The Christmas programme in Nocelle is usually announced by the «Giovani di Nocelle» close to the start of Advent, through the group's social media pages and the local Amalfi Coast press. No dates have been published for 2026 yet.
Based on previous editions, the structure of the event is expected to remain consistent: an evening dedicated to the lighting and decoration of the tree in Piazza Santa Croce, several social gatherings in the parish hall and the ExEx Building, and the travelling living nativity in the days following Christmas, starting from the village square. None of these elements are confirmed for 2026; this is a reconstruction based on the past, not an official programme.
Those planning to visit Nocelle during the holidays can check for updates at the Positano Municipality information office or consult the local press in the weeks prior.
Nocelle is a hamlet of Positano located at an altitude of about 450 metres. From the town centre, you can walk up a staircase of about 1,500 steps (a 30-40 minute walk) or take the local shuttle bus connecting Positano to the hamlet. Alternatively, you can arrive on foot from Bomerano (Agerola) via the Path of the Gods, which ends in Nocelle. By car, you can reach the upper part of Nocelle from the road climbing up from Montepertuso, though parking is very limited.
Events are concentrated during the Advent and holiday period, between early December and early January. The travelling living nativity usually takes place in the days following Christmas, in the late afternoon.
Nocelle offers few accommodation options, mainly B&Bs and holiday homes. A wider range of choices can be found in central Positano, Praiano, and Agerola.
