Christmas markets, artist-designed lights, and Irpinian flavors in the historic center of Bonito
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Natale e Arte is the signature Christmas event in the town of Bonito, a small gem in the Province of Avellino, Campania, overlooking the Miscano Valley and the hills of eastern Irpinia. Established in 2016 and reaching its tenth edition in 2025, the festival takes over the heart of the town for an entire weekend in December, blending markets, art, music, and gastronomy along a fully pedestrianized route.
The formula that has made this one of Irpinia's most popular Christmas events is simple: it is not just an isolated fair, but an entire village illuminated by artistic lights, with crafts housed in a historic cloister and squares filled with shows, workshops, and tastings.
The heart of the event is the Ex Convento Francescano in Largo Mario Gemma, which hosts the exhibitors' stalls and exhibitions; its cloister serves as the festival's natural concert hall. Outside, Piazza Martiri di Guerra welcomes the Santa Claus village, children's attractions, and the food area. The two hubs are just a short walk from each other, allowing visitors to explore on foot while following the light installations that illuminate the alleys of the historic center.
The markets are the soul of the event: the convent's rooms host local artisans, hobbyists, and creatives showcasing Christmas decorations, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, nativity scenes, and gift ideas. Alongside the stalls, the route features art exhibitions and displays that give the event its name and distinguish it from classic village markets.
The Artist-designed Lights (Luci d'Artista) strung along the village streets are the festival's calling card and the reason many visitors arrive at dusk. For children, a Santa Claus Village is set up in the square, complete with an electric train, inflatables, interactive games, cotton candy and popcorn carts, and Santa's house and throne with a mailbox for letters.
The live program alternates between popular entertainment and more refined performances: the Santa Claus parade with a costumed band and street performers kicks off the event, while the gospel concert in the cloister has become the highlight of the weekend. In 2025, the stage featured Selma Ezzine & Modern Orchestra. The lineup is completed by clowns, magic shows, roaming musicians, and folk groups.
The food area, managed by the Associazione Bonito Eventi, offers dishes from the traditional Irpinian rural cuisine and local specialties, paired with regional wines. We are, after all, in the land of Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo, Taurasi, and Aglianico, and the event is part of the regional Fiano Love Fest project, which promotes the gastronomic heritage of Campania.
Natale e Arte is organized by the Associazione Bonito Eventi in collaboration with the Municipality of Bonito, with the support of the Campania Region. The 2025 edition was realized as part of the Strategic Plan for Culture and Tourism, co-financed by the 2021-2027 Development and Cohesion Fund. This public investment has allowed for the expansion of light installations and artistic programming, transforming a local market into a major attraction for all of Irpinia.
As of the update of this guide, the organizers have not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 edition. Based on previous years, the event is expected in December 2026, on the weekend closest to Christmas, held between the Ex Convento Francescano and Piazza Martiri di Guerra. It is advisable to check the official channels of the Associazione Bonito Eventi before planning your visit.
Following the tenth edition in December 2025, Natale e Arte is expected to return to Bonito, in the province of Avellino, in December 2026. At the moment, there are no official announcements regarding dates, times, or the program: any temporal indication in this guide is an estimate based on previous editions, which have always taken place on a weekend close to Christmas.
If the event follows its usual format, the historic center will once again host artisan markets in the Ex Convento Francescano, artist-designed lights along the alleys, the Santa Claus village in Piazza Martiri di Guerra, and the food area featuring typical products and wines from Irpinia. Admission has always been free.
To confirm dates and the program, it is recommended to follow the Facebook page of the Associazione Bonito Eventi or contact the Municipality of Bonito directly.
Bonito is located in eastern Irpinia, about 30 km from Avellino. By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Grottaminarda exit, then follow provincial roads to Bonito (about 15 minutes). The nearest useful train station is Benevento, which is connected by bus lines; the reference airport is Naples-Capodichino, about an hour and a half away by car.
During the event, the historic center is pedestrianized: parking is available in areas along the access roads to the town, and visitors can continue on foot. The spaces of the Ex Convento Francescano are indicated as accessible.
Admission to the event and markets is free. In previous years, stalls have opened on Friday afternoon, with continuous hours from 9 AM to 9 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Tastings and food in the gastronomic area are for a fee.
The evening is the best time to experience the light installations: bring warm clothing, as temperatures in December drop significantly at an altitude of 500 meters. For those arriving from afar, accommodation is mainly available in Grottaminarda, Ariano Irpino, and Mirabella Eclano.
