About Narcissus Festival

Every late May, Rocca di Mezzo, in the heart of the Altopiano delle Rocche, celebrates the Narcissus Festival: a tradition dating back to 1947 that transforms this small Abruzzo town into a riot of color. Six allegorical floats, entirely covered in hand-picked mountain narcissi, parade through the streets, accompanied by costumed performers, music, and elaborate sets created by local groups. It is one of the most beloved folk festivals in inland Abruzzo, a symbol of rebirth and community.

A tradition that has blossomed since the post-war era

The Narcissus Festival in Rocca di Mezzo, in the province of L'Aquila, is one of the oldest and most deeply felt folk events in the Abruzzo mountains. It began in 1947, in the post-war period, as a sign of rebirth and hope for a community looking to restart after the difficult years of the conflict. Legend has it that the idea came from emigrants returning from the United States, inspired by the famous Pasadena Rose Parade: hence the intuition to parade with floats covered in flowers, replacing California roses with the narcissi that turn the meadows of the Altopiano delle Rocche white every spring.

The narcissus floats and the night-time floral display

The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, entirely covered in narcissi hand-picked from the high-altitude pastures surrounding the town. On the night before the parade, the evocative infiorata (floral display) takes place: dozens of volunteers insert the flowers one by one into the nets covering the float structures, creating scenic compositions through collective effort. What was once a simple procession of wooden carts pulled by oxen has evolved over time into a true artistic competition, featuring elaborate floats, costumes, and short theatrical performances.

The competition between the groups

Each float is created by a local group and participates in a competition: a jury awards the most beautiful float by evaluating three main criteria: flowering, structure, and scenic impact. Around the parade, music, dance, and scenes brought to life by costumed performers fill the streets of Rocca di Mezzo with visitors from all over Abruzzo and beyond. In recent years, the festival has also involved neighboring towns on the plateau, such as Ovindoli and Rocca di Cambio, strengthening the bond between communities that share the narcissus as a natural symbol of their territory.

Rocca di Mezzo and the Altopiano delle Rocche

Situated at over 1,300 meters above sea level, Rocca di Mezzo is one of the most charming villages in the L'Aquila hinterland, nestled in the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park. The Narcissus Festival represents the most anticipated moment of the year for the local community: an event that combines tradition, nature, and popular participation, capable of telling the story of inland Abruzzo's identity and attracting thousands of people every year amidst the colors of the floral floats.

Narcissus Festival — edition 2026

The 80th edition of the Narcissus Festival took place on May 30 and 31, 2026, in Rocca di Mezzo, with the main parade of allegorical floats on Sunday, May 31, starting at 3:00 PM in Piazza Principe di Piemonte. A historic milestone celebrated by six groups with spectacular floral floats, blending tradition, imagination, and community spirit.

For this anniversary edition, the 80th Narcissus Festival, six groups created as many allegorical floats covered in narcissi hand-picked on the Altopiano delle Rocche.
