Ten nights of free concerts in the courtyard of the Maschio Angioino, in Naples
Music at the Castle is the summer festival that lights up the monumental courtyard of Castel Nuovoโthe castle that Neapolitans have always called the Maschio Angioinoโjust a stone's throw from Piazza Municipio and the port. For ten consecutive nights, the Angevin walls and the Renaissance Triumphal Arch serve as a natural backdrop for an open-air stage, with gates opening at 8:00 PM and concerts starting at 9:00 PM. Admission is free until all available seats are filled, a choice that has made the festival one of the most popular events of the city's summer since its debut.
The event is promoted and funded by the Municipality of Naples and is part of the Estate a Napoli program, through which the city enlivens its squares, courtyards, villas, and monuments from June to September. Music at the Castle is also part of the Naples City of Music project, an initiative through which the administration supports the local music industry. Organization is entrusted to CMN Produzioni, which handles the festival's operational direction and programming.
The hallmark of Music at the Castle is its rejection of sonic monoculture: in just a few days, the lineup shifts from jazz and singer-songwriter rock to Balkan traditions, ethno-funk, and experimental pop-electronics. It is a bridge between avant-garde and world music, and an intergenerational dialogue between established artists and emerging talents. The format often includes two sets per night, allowing the audience to discover new projects before the main concert.
Castel Nuovo was commissioned by Charles I of Anjou in the late 13th century and redesigned in the Aragonese era: its massive tuff stone structure, cylindrical towers, and the marble Triumphal Arch at the entrance are among the most recognizable symbols of Naples. Listening to live music in its inner courtyard, with the stone reflecting the sound and the summer sky overhead, adds a dimension to the concert that no indoor hall could replicate. The castle is located in the San Ferdinando district, in the historic center of the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania.
The festival's location is ideal for combining a concert with an evening in the city: Piazza del Plebiscito, the Teatro di San Carlo, the Galleria Umberto I, and the Via Partenope waterfront are all just a few minutes' walk away. Before the show, it is worth stopping for a pizza, a frittatina, or a cuoppo in one of the local fry shops, and finishing with a coffee or a sfogliatella. Visitors from outside Naples can easily combine the evening with a visit to the National Archaeological Museum, the old city center, or a trip toward Mount Vesuvius and the coast.
Music at the Castle succeeds in a non-trivial task: combining free admission, artistic quality, and a heritage site without turning any of these elements into a mere pretext. It is a festival that speaks to Neapolitans and visitors alike, returning a monument to the city as a living public space rather than just a postcard.
From July 16 to 25, 2026, the monumental courtyard of Castel Nuovo hosted the second edition of Music at the Castle, ten evenings with fourteen live performances. The festival, promoted and funded by the Municipality of Naples as part of Estate a Napoli 2026 and the Naples City of Music project, was organized by CMN Produzioni.
The lineup built a bridge between sonic avant-garde and world music influences: it ranged from the metropolitan jazz-funk of Bassolino to the Balkan traditions of the Barcelona Gipsy BalKan Orchestra, from the rock-infused songwriting of Motta to the Neapolitan urban scene, ending with a grand finale by Casino Royale. The most anticipated evening was July 21st with Suzanne Vega and her Flying with Angels Tour.
As in the inaugural edition, admission remained free until capacity was reached, with gates opening at 8:00 PM and concerts starting at 9:00 PM.
