About Museum Nights

Museum Nights – On the Trail of the Lucanians transforms the historic center of Roccagloriosa, in the heart of the Cilento region, into a nocturnal journey weaving together archaeology, memory, and local flavors. Accompanied by guides, groups depart every hour from Borgo Sant'Antonio to reach Piazza del Popolo, passing through medieval alleys, stone portals, and museum halls housing artifacts from the ancient Lucanian community. At the end of the walk, visitors are treated to a platter of traditional Cilento products.

A night on the trail of the Lucanians

Museum Nights – On the Trail of the Lucanians is the evening that the Municipality of Roccagloriosa, in the province of Salerno, dedicates to its most ancient heritage. We are in the heart of the Cilento, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in a hilltop village overlooking the valleys and the Gulf of Policastro. Here, between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, lived a Lucanian community whose city walls, monumental necropolises, and a wealth of artifacts are now preserved in the town's museums. The concept is simple yet rare: visit these museums by night, on foot.

The route: from Borgo Sant'Antonio to Piazza del Popolo

The guided itinerary crosses the historic center from one end to the other. It starts at Borgo Sant'Antonio and arrives at Piazza del Popolo, the highest point of the town, following narrow alleys, stairways, and the architecture of the medieval village: baronial palaces, carved stone portals, and glimpses that take on a completely different appearance at night. Departures are staggered every hour, ensuring small groups and keeping the visit focused on storytelling rather than crowds.

The museums along the way

Roccagloriosa boasts a surprising concentration of museums for a town of its size. The local collections include:

  • «Antonella Fiammenghi» Civic Archaeological Museum, at Borgo Sant'Antonio, featuring materials from necropolises, settlements, and sacred areas: funerary goods, jewelry and gold, bracelets and rings, bronze mirrors, red-figure vases and black-glaze pottery, terracotta statuettes, and bronze plates with texts in the Greek alphabet and Oscan language;
  • «Sabato Balbi» Antiquarium, in Piazza del Popolo, displaying artifacts and evidence from the monumental tombs of the excavation area;
  • Museum of Oil and Popular Traditions, which tells the other half of the village's identity, that of the Cilento farming culture;
  • the Archaeological Area of Mount Capitenali, with the walls and burials of the ancient settlement, open during the summer season.

Archaeology and taste

The evening does not end with the last room. The ticket also includes a platter of local products designed to showcase the gastronomic excellence of the area: a choice consistent with the spirit of the initiative, which combines history, archaeology, traditions, and flavors into a single experience. It is the most authentic Cilento way to end a walk: sitting down, with something delicious in front of you, discussing what you have just seen.

Organizers

The initiative is promoted by Pro Loco Roccagloriosa – APS with the support of the Municipality, the Ministry of Culture, and the relevant archaeological and landscape authorities. It is a valorization project rather than a simple event: it connects municipal museums, the historic center, and local producers, striving to return to the community a heritage that for years was known mainly to specialists.

Why it's worth the trip

In Campania, there is no shortage of major night-time museum openings, but here the scale is different. Roccagloriosa offers no queues, harsh lights, or forced paths: it offers a quiet village, a handful of display cases containing the gold of the Lucanians, and a guide walking beside you. For those spending the summer in lower Cilento — between Palinuro, Marina di Camerota, and the Gulf of Policastro — it is one of the most intelligent evenings the region has to offer: two hours of real history, just a stone's throw from the sea.

Museum Nights — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Museum Nights – On the Trail of the Lucanians took place on Thursday, July 23, in Roccagloriosa, with departures staggered every hour from 8:00 PM to midnight. Small groups walked through the historic center from Borgo Sant'Antonio to Piazza del Popolo, visiting the town's museums and ending the evening with a platter of traditional Cilento products. Single fee of 10 euros per person.

The evening of July 23, 2026

For the summer of 2026, the Pro Loco Roccagloriosa – APS concentrated the entire archaeological heritage of the village into a single night. From 8:00 PM to midnight, every hour, a new group set off from Borgo Sant'Antonio: first the «Antonella Fiammenghi» Civic Archaeological Museum with the funerary goods and gold of the Lucanian necropolises, then the climb through the alleys and stairways of the historic center, and finally the «Sabato Balbi» Antiquarium in Piazza del Popolo.

The formula chosen is that of an immersive experience: no static visit, but a moving narrative that weaves together history, archaeology, traditions, and flavors. The platter of local products served at the end of the route completed the proposal, giving space to the gastronomic excellence of the Cilento territory.

The initiative was held with the support of the Municipality of Roccagloriosa, the Ministry of Culture, and the relevant archaeological and landscape authorities, as part of the summer opening of the municipal museums and the Archaeological Area of Mount Capitenali.
