The oldest religious festival in Buscemi, blending faith, brass bands, and fireworks in the Iblei Mountains
The Most Holy Crucifix Festival is the oldest religious celebration in Buscemi, a small village in the Iblei Mountains in the province of Syracuse, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. Devotion to the Crucifix dates back to 1602, the year the chapel dedicated to him was built inside the Church of the Carmine. By the early 18th century, the festival was already widely attended by the faithful. In 1919, the Most Holy Crucifix was proclaimed the Protector of the town, alongside the patron saint, the Madonna del Bosco.
The heart of the festival is the ancient statue of the Crucifix, a fine wooden carving kept in the Church of the Carmine. On the day of the celebration, the statue makes its triumphant exit from the church, greeted by the joy of the population, and is carried in procession through the main streets of the village to the Mother Church. The parade is accompanied by the festive sound of bells, a brass band, and the firing of fireworks, creating an atmosphere of intense participation.
The festival still preserves ancient customs, such as the evocative torchlight procession that used to take place on the preceding Friday, with the faithful carrying lit bundles of ampelodesmos grass. Buscemi, recognized as one of the most characteristic villages of the Iblei plateau and home to the "Places of Peasant Work" ecomuseum, offers a blend of the sacred and the profane during these days: stalls featuring local products are set up in the town center, while the squares come alive with concerts and musical shows.
For the people of Buscemi, the Most Holy Crucifix Festival is the quintessential identity-defining event, capable of drawing back emigrants and attracting visitors from neighboring towns. The setting of the Iblei village, with its Baroque churches and picturesque views around the Requesens Castle, provides the backdrop for a celebration that unites the community in faith and conviviality.
