The feud between the Montecchi and Capuleti families is revived at the Castles of Juliet and Romeo
In Montecchio Maggiore, in the province of Vicenza, stand two Scaligeri manors — the Castello della Bellaguardia and the Castello della Villa — which popular tradition has renamed the Castles of Juliet and Romeo. It is from here that the very name of the Montecchi family enters the story told by Luigi Da Porto and later immortalized by Shakespeare. Against this backdrop comes to life Montecchio Medievale - La Faida, the historical re-enactment that has become the city's identity event.
The event is divided into two parts. On the eve of the main day, in Piazza Marconi, a theatrical performance dedicated to the star-crossed love and the feud between the two families is staged, with two costumed processions starting from the districts of San Pietro and San Vitale and converging in the square. The following day, the Scaligeri Castles host the grand historical re-enactment: ladies and nobles, merchants and artisans, falconers, knights, jugglers, and flag-wavers recreate the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, with ancient games, old crafts, and the election of the new Juliet and Romeo.
Organized by the Associazione Storico-Culturale Giulietta e Romeo APS, the event is registered with the Ministry of Culture and is now a fixed fixture on the spring calendar of the West Vicentino area. Visits can be combined with the discovery of the Priare, the evocative underground quarries in the area. Admission is free.
The 25th edition of La Faida falls on April 30 and May 1, 2026, an important milestone for the symbolic event of Montecchio Maggiore. The direction of the theatrical performance is entrusted to Pino Costalunga, with the involvement of ENAIP Veneto for historical makeup and hairstyles.
On the evening of April 30, the city lights up with costumed processions and the performance in Piazza Marconi; on May 1, the Scaligeri Castles host the entire day of re-enactment, accompanied by the 50th Minimarcia Biancorossa simultaneously. Admission is free.
