Risorgimento history, local crafts, and flavors in the Cilento village of Monteforte
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Mons Fortis Traditions Walk is a late autumn event that invites you to discover Monteforte Cilento, a small town in the province of Salerno, Campania, perched at an altitude of about 600 meters on the slopes of Mount Chianiello, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It is neither a food festival nor a town fair: it is a guided, slow-paced, and narrative itinerary that traverses the village on foot, telling its story through its places, crafts, and flavors.
The toponym Monteforte derives from the Latin Mons Fortis, meaning "strong mountain" or fortified height: a name that reflects the defensive origins of the settlement, which grew in the early Middle Ages as populations fled Saracen raids along the coast. The walk starts right here, from the meaning of the name, to explain the layout of the old town: narrow alleys, stone arches, carved portals, and noble palaces overlooking the Alento valley.
Monteforte Cilento was one of the centers of the 1828 Cilento uprisings, one of the harshest and least-known chapters of the Southern Italian Risorgimento. The route touches the scenic Piazza Porta del Piano, recognizable by its ancient arch, and sites linked to the town's Risorgimento history, leading up to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The guides' narrative weaves the stories of local families with the broader history of the Italy that was taking shape: this is the thread that gives meaning to the walk and distinguishes it from a simple tourist visit.
An important part of the itinerary is dedicated to the artisan work still alive in the village. The stages include visits to local production workshops, such as an artisan bakery, where you can observe traditional processes up close and hear the stories of the families who carry them forward. It is a concrete way to understand the economy of a Cilento hinterland town, where the processing of agricultural products remains a daily defense against depopulation.
The food and wine aspect of the walk revolves around two local excellences: taralli and figs, iconic products of the Cilento hinterland and its rural diet. Tastings are distributed along the route, so that food is not a separate moment but part of the story: you taste where it is produced, together with those who produce it. It is also an opportunity to understand why these two seemingly humble crafts have become identity markers for the entire area.
The initiative is part of the project «Monti Alburni, Vesole e Rupi del Calore — Authentic experiences in the Cilento hinterland», which brings together six municipalities — Roccadaspide (lead partner), Trentinara, Felitto, Controne, Magliano Vetere, and Monteforte Cilento — with the support of the Campania Region as part of the Strategic Plan for Culture and Tourism. The stated goal is to strengthen the identity of the villages, combat depopulation, and bring the Cilento hinterland back to the center of the regional tourism offer, beyond just the coastal summer season.
The event takes place in late November, as part of the project's autumn calendar. The documented edition took place on Friday, November 28, 2025, with a meeting at 3:30 PM in Piazza dei Martiri e degli Eroi. The format is suitable for families, casual walkers, and local history enthusiasts: the elevation gain is minimal, but the alleys have stone paving and are slightly inclined. At the moment, no date has been published for the 2026 edition: it is advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of Monteforte Cilento before planning your trip.
For the 2026 edition of the Mons Fortis Traditions Walk, there are currently no official dates or published programs. The reference remains the previous edition, held in late November in the old town of Monteforte Cilento, in the province of Salerno.
The established format includes a guided walk through the alleys and noble palaces of the village, with stops at sites linked to the 1828 Cilento uprisings, visits to active artisan workshops, and tastings of local products, particularly taralli and figs. However, it is not possible to confirm this for 2026 until the organizers release the calendar.
We recommend following the channels of the Municipality of Monteforte Cilento and the communications of the "Monti Alburni, Vesole e Rupi del Calore — Authentic experiences in the Cilento hinterland" project to learn about the date, meeting time, and booking procedures as soon as they are announced.
